I think I know why you might be scared of colour 😬😬😬
This is something I’ve been thinking about for a while. When studying, all the images of historical interiors were full of colour as far back as the 15th Century.
So using colour in interiors isn’t new at all, but why are so many interiors in the last 20 years so neutral?
Throughout the 50s - 90s, homeowners embraced colour in every aspect. Homes were individualised and full of self expression. These were bold homes with whacky themes and experimental techniques.
But by the late 90s, homes took a shift towards a more subdued colour palette, with many turning their back on bold colour combinations.
Y2K was littered with ‘shabby chic’ and magnolia and by 2010 interior design was re-shaped by the launch of Instagram and Pinterest. Trends spread rapidly and altered the way we designed our homes and minimalism soared through these platforms.
And with that, it killed creativity and individualism and the fear of colour was ingrained.
I want to help people be braver with colour and pattern again. Colour has magic powers. It can change moods and evoke emotions. It’s a tool for self-expression and creativity. I’ve written a full blog post for those that want to learn more (link in bio).
Do you agree?
Tag a friend who is nervous of colour and lets see if we can inspire them to step out of their comfort zone and embrace the joy that colour can bring into their lives.
