An inveterate traveler, James Boyd Niven lived in Europe and New York where he studied fashion, architecture and photography before settling down in his hometown of Buenos Aires. Working from an Aladdin's cave of treasures that he keeps in his warehouse and atelier, Boyd Niven's projects, be they his own 12-room house in the Palermo Hollywood area of Buenos Aires, the farmhouses he has completed i

n Argentina and Uruguay, or the 100-room luxury hotel he is currently designing in Montevideo embody a chic, contemporary sensibility through the creative reuse of traditional design elements. In Boyd Niven's hands, a classic Mies Barcelona chair lives harmoniously with antique Murano chandeliers, chinchilla throws, vintage wallpapers and mirrored disco balls. Twice winner of the Design Award at Buenos Aires’ prestigious CasaFOA design exhibition, James' projects have been published in both Spanish and German AD, London's Sunday Telegraph and he was recently selected by AD France as one of the top 80 designers worldwide.

It is only logical to look back on projects that are ten, twenty years old and not find them a bit off or outdated.

They were purposely kept in the book, precisely because they were done on a dime. Inexperience can produce some out of the box ideas.

We had fun back then, spray painting cheap furniture from the flee market, some were even picked up from the sidewalk.

For a hotel project in Montevideo, Uruguay we rented a warehouse where we displayed one of each of the pots selected, and exhibited the different species of bushes, palms and trees to be used throughout the project.

Lorena and Melisa, lead a landscape studio called Identidad Paisajismo, with whom we worked so well together from the beginning to completion.
