Buttonholes are the bit everyone dreads. They shouldn't be.

Here's one on the Juki DX3. The button drops into the clamp on the back of the foot, and that is genuinely the whole setup. The machine measures the button, works out the size, and sews the buttonhole to match. Same size, every time, however many you need down a shirt front.

The other thing this style of foot does quietly well: it clamps the fabric. Rather than leaving the feed dogs to do all the work, the foot grips and carries the fabric through. That is what saves you on the tricky bits. Cuff and waistband seams where the layers suddenly double, coat weight wool, slippery linings, stretchy jersey. Anywhere fabric would normally shift or stall halfway along and leave you with one buttonhole slightly longer than its neighbour.

No marking out. No counting stitches. No four step dial to turn at exactly the right moment while holding your breath.

If buttonholes have been putting you off a project, come and have a go on one in the shop. Bring the buttons and a scrap of your actual fabric and we will run a few through with you.

If the uniform's still in the bag, this is the weekend. 🧵

A few things that make the job quicker:

Press the hem before you sew, it'll sit flat instead of fighting you.
Lengthen the stitch a little on thick trousers.
Always a fresh needle.
Leave a bit of extra turn-up if they're still growing, much easier to let down in January than to buy again.

Stuck on something? Ask in the comments, we'll do our best to help.

Are you getting ready for Christmas?
..Rita is. She made this little chap years ago, and he still comes out every Christmas. 🎄

That's the thing about a handmade gift, it hangs about a lot longer than something off a shelf.

There are 17 weekends between now and Christmas. Sounds like plenty, but a quilt, an advent calendar or a run of gifts will eat through them quicker than you'd think and they do ask a lot of a machine.

Is yours due a service? Pop it in and we'll get it running sweetly again.

Not sure it's up to the job? Come and have a play on a few and see how you get on.

All much easier in August or September than in November! 🧵

Please join us in congratulating Steve, he's been appointed a Council Member of the SMTA, the Sewing Machine Trade Association! 🎉
It's a great recognition of years in the trade, and it means we get a say in the standards and training that keep the industry moving forward. 👏

This month’s Machine of the Month is the Babylock Acclaim, picked by Steve.
The Acclaim is an overlocker built around Automatic Thread Delivery, which takes the guesswork out of tension and keeps your stitch consistent every time. As Steve put it, with that feature doing the work, the stitch cannot be wrong.
It also features Revolution Air threading, so no more fiddling with tweezers or loopers, just a puff of air and you’re threaded and ready to go.
If you’re after an overlocker that takes the stress out of the job, come and see the Acclaim on the showroom floor. We’d love to show you what it can do.

An old style Bernina is one of our favourites to work on. These machines were built to last and it shows once you get inside them. They’re a joy to service, solid mechanics, beautifully made, and clearly loved by their owner for years.
They do tend to come in looking like this though. Years of use means years of fluff and dust building up around the motor and bobbin area, more than you’d expect for a machine that’s still sewing away happily.
A service clears all that out, checks the tension and timing, and gets it running the way it was made to. If your machine has been going a good while without a check, it’s probably hiding a bit of fluff too.
Bring it in for a quote and to get it booked in, or leave it with one of our service agents.
