use locally beachcombed sea worn fragments of pottery and glass and seashells to create authentic works of mosaic home and garden decor, gifts and souvenirs - all designed and handmade in Fife. Inspiration for their designs comes mainly from these pieces of sea glass and pottery themselves (shape or colour) or the seaside in general. Their most popular designs, since they first appeared a few year
s ago, have been the cheeky little crabs that instantly send you back to the lovely lazy summer days on the beach. take commissions for more personal works where the designs can be anything from a simple house number or a place name to something more elaborate commemorating an occasion like a wedding or depicting a pet dog. By not cutting the fragments but trying to find shapes and sizes in the right colours that work with the designs maintains the smoothness that is characteristic to sea glass and sea pottery and gives these mosaics their distinctiveness. This is the most time consuming part of the design process unless you count the hours on the beach! The designs are set in concrete thus allowing them to be displayed as decorations outside in the garden as well as in the home. Most of the works are free standing, some can be hung depending on the size and shape. Concrete, with its clear lines and rough appearance, provides a striking contrast to the smoothness of the sea worn glass and pottery. There’s something incredibly exciting in first finding these little pieces of history and then being able to turn them into interesting works of mosaic decorations for your home and garden. Some of the fragments can be centuries old and by picking them up, arranging them into designs and setting them in concrete they are being preserved for years to come providing some joy again.
