Here we are… in September, trying to keep the school run smooth. That’s when we miss proper storage and a boot room.

A good boot room is less about the wellies and more about making family life easier.

One zone per child. Coats, bags, shoes, PE kits — all with a proper home.

Design for the wet Tuesday morning, not just the photograph.

That’s when good design really earns its keep and did such a good job of it here!

Saturday Design Tip

Good joinery should feel like part of the architecture, not something added afterwards.

Here, we designed the wardrobes around the existing doorway, turning an awkward wall into full-height storage while keeping the proportions of the room balanced.

Storage, yes. But make it architecture.

Renovating a Period Home is all about compromises.

Replace old with new? Go for what’s on trend?
Pick the colour of the year? There is no right or wrong answer!

You have to do what is right for you.

Just remember to respect the original features and make them work for your new space.

Keeping the original features mean you keep the character of the home, save money in the long run (it helps keep the value of the house in check!) and avoid cheap replacements that will do nothing to enhance your home’s aesthetics.

Word of advice? Incorporate original features in your new design as much as possible!

Style never goes out of fashion.

Pinterest didn’t wreck your budget. The missing list did.

Before you save one more image, write two lists: must-haves and nice-to-haves.

The must-haves come first, the things that make a homework. Not always the prettiest, but the ones you’ll regret skipping.

The nice-to-haves can wait for when they won’t cost you something that matters.

The best renovations aren’t the ones with the biggest moodboards. They’re the ones with the clearest priorities.

Before you knock a wall down… do you actually know what it’s holding up? 🔨

One of the biggest mistakes I see with renovations is starting with the exciting bits before properly understanding the building.

Especially with older and period properties, what you see on a drawing and what you actually find on site can be two very different things.

That wall you want gone might be supporting the floor above. It might be carrying part of the roof.

Previous owners may have removed or altered something elsewhere in the house. And sometimes, you simply don’t know until you investigate.

This is why you need to do your homework before the hammer comes out.

Site inspection
Existing drawings
Structural engineer where required

It might not be the glamorous part you like, but it can save you from some very expensive surprises later.

For me, a good renovation isn’t about knocking everything down and starting again.
It’s about understanding what you have before deciding what needs to change.

And then we can get the hammer out (my fav part!) 🔨

We ran a small test: could AI design the window dressing for this Edwardian flat?

The renders were lovely with full-length curtains, sympathetic to the period detail, exactly the kind of image that sells a scheme.

What it couldn’t give us was a survey, a fabric quantity, a track that actually fits an Edwardian window, or an installer who knows how to hang it without damaging original joinery. That’s the gap.

AI is genuinely useful for visuals and ideas. But it’s not ready for measuring and specifying a job as much as a designer, and that is why you still needs a person in the room.

Visuals are great, but nothing beats a real pair of fresh eyes and experience to back it up.
