Extreme weight loss for cushions!

These cushions, on a couple of nearly new sofas, were solid and over stuffed making them too hard to sit on comfortably. I went to measure up for new fibre wrapped foam cushions but on discussion the Client wanted to try less feathers first. So we agreed to make them the same length as the cover so they weren’t further compacted when within the cover by taking 5” off and 1.2kg of feathers out.
I delivered one cushion, the Client did the “bum test” that evening and was delighted so I got on and reduced the other three. A very messy job, but someone’s got to do it. 🤣

Antique deep seated armchair

This chair had already been on a journey before it got to me. Broken frame with an old rustic fix, plus more recent frame failures, boards instead of webbing and a missing caster. We too had our moments; restoring the frame and making square, sourcing a replacement antique caster that matched* and full re upholstery with buttoning as per the original and with a checked top fabric… I must admit I walked away a lot… got there in the end though and isn’t he handsome, even if I say so myself. 🤭

(*if anyone is looking for a random old replacement caster I now have a box full)

WONKY SOFA LEG

Sometimes it’s the little things…

Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of this lovely little yellow sofa which had a leg that kept collapsing. Once I’d taken the dust cover off the bottom it was clear that the timber on the front base rail had split and the leg was able to move about.
I glued and screwed the split and as it was at a vulnerable part of the sofa I added an extra block to secure the whole corner.
The client didn’t like the original angled legs either, so I replaced them with some more to her liking, that I had in the workshop.

Who are you calling a “burst couch”? 🤣

This is my fourth piece covered in the same lovely wool fabric that has sustained damage to the seat, with help from some 4 legged friends. In my opinion fabrics with a rub test of less than 30,000 are just not up to every day living (general domestic). As with the previous pieces the client chose a Moon complimentary plain, this time in the colour Gorse, which not only meets the British Standards for (Cigarette & Match) for domestic upholstery, without treating with more chemicals but also achieves a higher rub test at 40,000.

Removed all the upholstery from the seat down to the sprung unit, built up again with the same foam but also with supportive layers so should the dog go through the top layer again, the padding won’t burst out as it did last time. I also took the opportunity to replace missing buttons and re-securing others that were allowing the back and sides to become baggy.

Bleached Seats

These lovely armchairs live in a conservatory which is used all year round. Unfortunately sun and wear had ruined the covers on the seats and the client wanted just the seats reupholstered to keep them smart, usable but not the costs for a full recover. Recognise the fabric? I had a sofa in a couple years ago with the same fabric and had to replace the seat after a beautiful golden retriever had gone through it! I showed them photos and whilst the original plaid is still available they liked the plain wool contrast which also has a higher rub rating and therefore should last longer.

Chairs done and I returned them but one of the arms had a very slight wobble, so it came back to me. I thought I hadn’t pulled the fabric on the arms tight enough in an effort to pattern match the lines better than previously, but on opening it up it turned out the chair had been badly made, the top arm joint had room to move and yes the previous fabric probably was holding it in place. So, without removing all the upholstery I packed, glued and screwed both joints on the arm and then reupholstered the outer layers back into place.

Headboard

Recovered this huge headboard with fresh fabric as the previous was faded and marked. Took the opportunity to change the design slightly by replacing the border foam and making the main panel more accessible for the Client to have reupholstered in the future, under some double piping.

Antique Easel

This job was more on the conservation side of restoration rather than to make it look new, which would have been wrong.

The easel arrived in pieces; three uprights had broken off the head of the frame and the back supporting leg had snapped where it pivoted. What wasn’t obvious at first was the bottom of the central upright was also broken making the uprights not rigid causing further damage and it to split into the carving at the top.

Once I had cleaned, glued, filled and repaired, I revived the whole piece and colour matched stain to blend in all my repairs. Disguising was the most frustrating part of the restoration as the easel is not black or dark brown but something in between and getting the colour match right in the right light was a struggle, but got there in the end.
I then waxed the whole piece.

2 Parlour Armchairs

Two chairs came in requiring rewebbing and recovering. One had had it’s seat replaced but needed the old back and arm paddings replaced before being reupholstered in this lovely wool plaid.

The second chair was original right down to the frame. It even had it’s original top cover which had been recovered over with the floral velvet… but the second chair had a secret. As I took the old upholstery off the old padding, which was a mix of wadding and wood wool, started to fall to bits and revealed cocoons and dead moths. The whole chair got ripped out and reupholstered from scratch.

Fabulous, solid, well made, comfortable chairs now restored for another generation.

Celebrating my Webbing Stretcher! 😁

It’s 20 years old and made by me during my first term at college when I returned to study for an HND in Antique Furniture Restoration. (Okay, it’s had a new peg but that’s the whole point of the subject 👍🏻🤣).
