About the screening -
‘The School of Plural Futures programme continues this May with an event curated by group members Caitlin and Ciara Turnbull. The evening will feature selected clips from the acclaimed series Reservation Dogs, created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, followed by a screening of Harjo’s thought-provoking documentary on community, heritage, and the importance of song.
Caitlin and Ciara will introduce the event, reflecting on resonances between life in Lochalsh and Skye and the community depicted in rural Oklahoma. Caitlin has selected a number of comedic scenes from Reservation Dogs that speak to shared experiences and we are sure will connect strongly with audiences in Lochalsh, Skye, and Raasay. The series follows four Indigenous teenagers from the Muscogee (Creek) Nation navigating adolescence, identity, and their aspirations to reach California.
The screening will also include This May Be the Last Time, in which Sterlin Harjo explores his family history, including the mysterious disappearance of his grandfather in 1962. The film traces the role of song in sustaining community, weaving together this personal story with the wider history of hymns that have united Native American communities in moments of worship, joy, tragedy, and hope.
Through its exploration of these songs, the documentary becomes a far-reaching journey, moving across the American Southwest, the deep South, and as far as the Scottish Highlands, highlighting the enduring power of music to connect people across time and place.
Everyone welcome’
