New stock delivered today for .lancaster
I am delighted to have the opportunity to collaborate on some of these books with Rachel Evans .lion.studio
I have bound four little books with her original hand printed monotypes and they look great! Mixed media paper of 140gsm means they are suitable for writing, sketching, light washes, charcoal, oil pastel etc. They are bound using longstitch, twin needle coptic or French link with tapes and open out completely flat.

I have been running a new two session workshop which combines printmaking and bookbinding.
The first afternoon we created abstract collagraph plates by tearing away and gluing onto a mountboard plate. This created textures which we then rolled over with ink and printed. We explored ghost prints for endpapers and double dropping for interesting experimental results.
The following week we used these prints to make the cover boards for two books.
The first binding was a traditional French link and tapes to which we added covers front and back and left the spines exposed. The second was a less complex lovely Longstitch binding.
Although I have been bookbinding for a while now this was the first time for teaching and we did run over into a third session! With brilliant feedback we figured out how I could tweak the sessions to make them run to schedule next time. Time management is not one of my strongpoints!!!
Our four printmakers now have two lovely books to fill and are hopefully inspired to keep exploring the wonderful world of bookbinding…….
My next workshop will be in November when I think this time we will bind the two books with Longstitch and double needle Coptic binding.

Some pre loved OS maps of Cumbria have been made into small notebooks, great for tucking into a bag or pocket.
Two are covered with an etching entitled “Plant Life” which was inspired by microscopic plant cells. The etching was printed from an aluminium plate . The plate is placed into a bath of copper sulphate which eats into the metal. The longer it is left the darker the tone. I was exploring how to get different tones using various greasy materials which slowed the etching process down. I have bound one with a Long stitch binding, and the other with French link and tapes.
The other etching is “Ice & Fire” and this was created by pressing objects into a soft acid resist which was covering the metal plate. I used a bunch of threads for the sky, à tin foil plate for the ice, orange fruit netting for the water and hessian for the foreground.

I’m currently making 5 new sketch books for .lancaster
There are four small notebooks covered with pre- lived OS maps, creases and all. One is a blue collagraph and the other is an etching and aquatint from my student days in 1982. Still to be printed is an etching based on the cell structure of plants.
I am still exploring different methods of binding, some quick and easy, others more complex. If you fancy printing and binding your own I have three places left on my workshop - print your cover one afternoon and then bind it together the following week.

Four more little journals to add to my collection in .lancaster These are covered with an abstract collagraph print and are small single signature notebooks that can be stuffed into a pocket or bag. They will get worn and soft with use and each one is different. One has coloured pastel paper, another some scraps of Japanese washi. My favourite, of course, has one of my dad’s poems along with a map of Blea Water:

“…….Oh, it must have been a sight,
When the melting ice
Snuffled its way off High Street.
Growling, as it shovelled
Riggindale into Mardale……”

If you would like to print and bind your own journal with me I have 4 places left on my workshop
Two Wednesday afternoons on the 20th & 27th May 2:30-5:30.
The first session you will create a collagraph plate and print the cover for your book. The second session you will use a Longstitch binding to bring your book together.

Do you have Wednesday mornings free to join us for 6 weeks ?
Level 1 printmaking is suitable for complete beginners along with those with more experience who want a refresher.
You will learn new skills in a small group in our traditional printmaking studio
Level 1 will explore linocut & monotype with myself, drypoint & stencils with Jenny Hack, collagraph & chine collé with .mccabe
I have always struggled with drawing, composition and colour but printmaking allows me to make marks, create texture and develop ideas without needing these particular skills. The printmaking process is fascinating, exciting, rewarding and full of surprises.
You will use high quality tools, surfaces, ink and paper and will leave the workshop with a lovely selection of prints and a wealth of knowledge about traditional printmaking processes. These alone will allow you to appreciate print in a whole new light……

We look forward to sharing this wonderful space with you beginning this Wednesday, 8th April at 10:30-1:30

I had my sewing machine out again recently to make some cushions for . He has created some designs to commemorate the bicentenary of Lancashire Weaver’s Uprising of 1826. There will be a series of works and collaborative projects throughout Lancashire from April onwards. They are printed on beautiful linen cloth over 4 colour ways by and are 15” square with a zipped opening.

Join me this Saturday 14th February as there are just two places left on my drypoint with chine collé workshop
This is a wonderfully direct form of printmaking which creates lovely velvety lines using a sharp scribe. We will be exploring making marks with different implements before filling the lines with ink and printing on our handsome Victorian etching presses. Chine collé is a way of adding a pop of colour in part or over all of the image using thin papers. We will have the opportunity to make our own using acrylic inks and intense pencils, use our collection of papers or bring your own ephemera to try.
Thanks to the artists for allowing me to use their prints to illustrate: Rach .lion.studio with her eggs on a plate, Denise .keenjunk for a lovely example of using different coloured inks in the à la poupée technique and Jean Harrison for her linoprint with chine collé
