When Timber Meets Resin 🪵⛩️💧

This project is a new venture for me involving self learning resin, which incorporated into freestanding centre pieces using Japanese joinery techniques and heavily inspired by the Japanese culture. I have created and produced this Chabudai (Low Profile Tea Table) whilst also highlighting Japandi Aesthetic - Wabi-Sabi meaning imperfect beauty and the western trend of resin.

🪵50mm Live edge Oak slabs was used for every component from the top, legs, rails and middle cross member. The top I kept the live edge profile to create a natural river flow to create a calm feel whilst not being to over empowering. I used some Black American Walnut for the bow ties to stabilise the split down one live edge slab. Black American Walnut was also used for the tusked wedges to hold the frame altogether, this creates a strong clamping action of the rails and legs without the need for mechanical fixings or glue. The benefit of this is that you can safely dismantle and take with you when moving home or pass down to your grandkids that will last a lifetime.

⛩️Torii gates were the main design for the legs as they don't traditionally symbolise strength however they do symbolise spiritual strength, vitality, resilience, and divine protection. They have also withstood natural disaster whilst buildings around have crumbled.

💧I dyed the resin using a Dark Anthracite Grey powder to add contrast in colour to the warm oak and subtle walnut colours. Using the Anthracite Grey Powder also adds silvery blue tones and able to shape some swirly patterns so its not looking flat. I didn't want to fill the split as I wanted this also to be a purposely left open to highlight natural beauty of the timber. Having this running directly down the middle of the table top and centralised to the Torii gate design legs also symbolises the pathway for the spiritual realm for the Kami (spirits/deities).

Heatwave Special 🌞😎🪵✅🚪🛠🏡

🌞Outdoor furniture and doors take such a beating from the elements all year round and especially in this case for these rebated double doors for a garden summer house. When looking at this job my client had two softwood doors that were made poorly with crazy gaps all round the doors and the frame itself was massively out of square. They asked me if I could manufacture two new doors to match the existing Georgian style doors.

🪵 In the workshop we set out to make these doors from scratch out of Sapele which is common practice for windows and doors especially if they are going to be painted. The lifespan of the Sapele compared to replacing with softwood out performs and outlasts by 10+ years with regular maintenance. Using traditional joinery of mortice and tenon joints with haunches, strengthened with wedges glued from the outside just like they would have done many years ago.

✅Another huge benefit of using Sapele for this project is its high natural resistance to rot, fungal decay and wood boring insects. Due to its interlocking grain expanding and contracting is kept to a minimum which is prevents warping of the doors.

🚪Kept to the Georgian style with the glass, glazing bars. This provides a lot of natural light to enter the summer house and provides a more aesthetically pleasing set of doors than just having a big pane of glass on show. Once the toughened glass had arrived from I was able to fit the glazing bars along with security glazing tape and sealed up. Final coat of primer was applied once the glazing bars were cleaned up properly.

🛠 Installation we looked at trying to square up the door frame but there wasn't any allowance to achieve this without dismantling the structure to get behind the panelling/cladding. I took this into account when making the doors, where I made the doors bigger for trimming and shaping to suit the shape of the opening.

Windmill Shelf Behind the Scenes Close up 🛠🪵🚂🕰️📐!!

🪵After receiving a significant amount of messages for a close up of the windmill shelf last week I'm sharing this video of the finished product in the workshop, before heading to site for fitting.

🚂You can see the history of the reclaimed oak railway sleeper from the deep shakes, splits and knots that really shows the character of this piece. These imperfections are what gives this piece all its character and shows the decades of history it has with thousands upon thousands of trains passing over this each and every year.

🕰️To preserve the history of this single piece of oak, I ripped it down in half to get the depth, put it through the thicknesser to the correct thickness to clean up the saw marks. These were book matched before gluing together so it would be like you was opening the oak like a book and the grain is mirrored. Once glued together it was sanded flat, then Amber was applied to bring out the rich dark tones of the oak that has aged beautifully. Naturally oak is light beige - brown hues where reclaimed oak is usually a darker brown due to the age and conditions it was used in.

📐The real challenge of any heritage site project isn't just to make it look good on the bench. It's precision engineering to effortlessly flow against the irregularities of the windmill that's over 230 years old and being a Grade II listed building. Templating the curvature and angle of the windmill is a must beforehand to get it millimetre perfect before fitting. Even the packers for the brackets were shaped to the pitch of the 1700s windmill.

Bespoke Narrowboat Bar 🛠🚤🥃🪵📥💡!!

🚤 Space on a narrowboat is an upmost important factor and premium when there are very limited options to what you can incorporate. However my client wanted to incorporate a little mini bar area with shelving for hidden storage. Obviously it would be rude not to enjoy the first drink with them and having a picture taken.

🥃 Created the L shape mini bar from MR MDF and sealed all round with an oil based paint due to the high humidity changes during the seasons. We could have use marine grade enamel paint but the client didn't want the glossy look once fully cured.

🪵For the top we went with solid oak glued together to get the width of the main bar area. Stained to a deep brown traditional bar colour and then lacquered for the top finish to prevent any water damage when in use.

📥Hidden storage integrated into the bar, hidden from sight is the perfect way to create more storage solutions in such a limited space. This also flows well with the bar itself to store bar equipment and personal belongings such as books or games which you'd likely see in a village pub in the UK

💡Warm White LED's are incorporated under the oak top to give a warm feeling especially at night when its dark outside. This just makes the space really pop and glow when the other lights are dimly light creating a more relaxed, winding down feeling.

If this has brought you inspiration and you would like something similar to your space whether that's an narrowboat fit out, outside man cave or anything else then don't hesitate to get in touch:

Behind the Scenes 🛠👨‍🔬🎨🪵!!

🛠While the van is in the garage this week for repair, I've only managed to get into the workshop one day. Whilst being at the workshop I've had the pleasure of meeting/hosting from showcasing their Oil Plus 2C range.

👨‍🔬During this testing, research and development session turns out we had a lot in common and not just in joinery. Due to our common interests, it's sparked some ideas for some projects and a potential side adventure.

🎨Instead of testing on Oak like most people do as it's very common for projects these days. I pulled out some exotic timbers which include Purpleheart, Padauk, Wenge and more. This pushed the boundaries out of the norm where myself and Chris can try different combinations on exotic timbers which aren't used day to day, if ever in the UK.

🪵My Favourite combination out of all the testing was the Padauk and Midnight Sky. Created a beautiful colour combination with the deep red tones of the Padauk coming through what I can only describe as mystical blue shade of the Midnight Sky. Something out of a fantasy book/game would be a very striking accessory to a Dungeons and Dragons group

Which exotic timber and colour combination is your favourite?

Throwback Thursday 😶‍🌫️📐🪵⚜️🚂🛏️!!

😶‍🌫️Looking back at one of my favourite projects to date.
The finished product of the seating area in a windmill kitchen area along with a reclaimed oak shelf and a floating bedside drawer unit.

📐The client wanted to utilise the space more efficiently and to create more storage within the property. To maximise every mm we could we designed a multi-functional seating nook featuring built in storage within the wall cavity, heavy-duty pull out shaker drawer and a lift up hatch in the Oak seat.

🪵Beautiful Amber applied to Oak tops to create a warm Oak bringing out the natural beauty of the timber; contrasted with the darker green undertones of the shaker style drawer and door.

⚜️Antique Brass handle and ring pull were the go to choice for this project to give the space a more unique rustic look to match the rest of the property.

🚂Using reclaimed oak for the shelf added a lot of character and history in keeping with the windmill as this was sourced from an old railway sleeper seeing 1000s and 1000s of trains each and every year. This one piece would have seen so much during its lifetime and now will be enjoyed in this family home to see and tell further stories for many years to come.

🛏️ Bespoke joinery isn't just about creating beautiful furniture pieces to fit into awkwardly used spaces it's also about creating furniture that flows throughout a household effortlessly fitting into the atmosphere of the room. The floating bedside table does exactly this, tying in the master bedroom and the seating area in the kitchen space comfortably without feeling out of place.

Last week's install for a client in a couple of bathroom wall units. Clients spec was 'We'd like something to our bathroom units for our daughter's en-suite'. Mirror doors and LED lights was a must for this client. Doors, carcasses and shelves are all out of H3158 ST19 Grey Vicenza Oak. All the doors are push to open.

After a lot of ups and downs over the last 4-5 months with trying to get funding for a bigger workshop space fully kitted out. Which unfortunately didn't end up happening due to being declined from multiple funding options. I recently moved into a smaller unit to start growing again and take on bigger projects.

Smaller machinery is my next step for growth which hopefully will be on order in the next coming days 😉

We push on and keep fighting💪😁👍
