Most of us never think about what’s inside our furniture. ☠️

Flame retardants were introduced with good intentions, improving fire safety, but growing research is raising important questions about the long-term impact of some of the chemicals used in upholstered furniture.

For upholsterers and furniture restorers, exposure can be part of daily working life through foam dust, fibres and old interiors.

Many European countries have already restricted or moved away from certain flame-retardant chemicals, while the UK still relies heavily on them in furniture manufacturing.
