Worked off a centre line so the points run true, then cut in round the panelled return and along the skirting. A room with corners like that punishes a bad set-out, and this one holds square right into the doorway.

Pale oak lifts a hallway, and the grain still reads clearly rather than looking washed out.

Nobody photographs a subfloor, and it decides more about your new floor than the floor itself does 🔍

Floorboards move and gap, and there is usually a screw head sitting proud. Board over the top or you will read every join through the new floor.

Concrete is usually flat, but not always. A dip you cannot see by eye turns into a soft spot in LVT within months 📏

Then damp. An unsealed concrete floor pushes moisture up into whatever goes on it. Much better found before than after 💧

Straight up the middle, rods and all 👌

Beige latte runner with a caramel border, in at Groby.

Even margin of white paint either side the whole way up, and every rod sitting level with the one above it. That gets measured before a single rod goes in, not eyeballed as you go.

A tight weave like this takes stair traffic, and the bound edge keeps the sides clean.

Fresh carpet down, offcut still rolled up in the corner 👌

Deep pile saxony in a soft grey, in at Groby.

A pile this long has to be laid all running the same way or the colour shifts between one drop and the next. It only shows once the light hits it, so it gets checked before anything is stretched in.

Saxony in a bedroom is the one you feel getting out of bed on a cold morning.

LVT does the heavy lifting. Claws do not gouge it like they do real wood, wet paws are no bother, and the whole floor wipes over in a couple of minutes.

If you want the softness of carpet, go tight rather than deep. A tight twist or loop takes the punishment and cleans up properly, where a long soft pile just traps everything that walks in.

Stain resistant fibres are worth the money in a playroom or a lounge with a dog in it. Polypropylene shrugs off spills that would set into a wool carpet for good.

Herringbone that carries a whole room 👌

Awkward shape to set out, that one. Bay at the far end, a hearth cut into the middle of the floor, and the points still land square all the way through. All decided on the centre line before the first block went down.

A dark oak like this handles the daily traffic of a main living room without every mark showing.
