Wisdom Wednesday

You can have the most beautiful lighting scheme in the world, but if it’s not easy to control, it won’t be used in the way it was intended. Lighting needs to be intuitive and adaptable to everyday life.

This is something that often gets overlooked in self-build and renovation projects, where the focus is on fittings rather than how they’re used.

A good lighting plan considers not just what goes where, but how it all works together at the touch of a switch.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions I see on self-build and renovation projects. Electricians are highly skilled at installing lighting, but they’re not usually responsible for designing it. If there isn’t a clear lighting plan or specification in place, they’ll quite understandably install what they’ve been asked to, which can lead to a very basic result that doesn’t reflect how you want your home to look or feel.

Good lighting design needs to be thought through before installation begins. If you want your home to feel considered, comfortable and well-lit, it’s worth having a proper plan in place rather than leaving it to chance.
