Down at floor level, that weave is something 👌

Herringbone loop pile carpet, in at Lichfield.

A long hallway like this has to run as one piece, so the drop is worked out before anything is cut. Then the weave has to stay square the whole length of it, or it reads crooked against the panelling.

Come and have a look in Lichfield.

Four floors, four rooms. Can you match them up? 🔍

Have a guess in the comments and we will tell you which ones you got right. Some of them are more obvious than others.

All four are in the Lichfield showroom if you want to settle it in person.

Carried straight through into the back room 👌

Abbs Velvet Dream in Dust 02, fitted by our Lichfield team.

Running one carpet through the opening means the drop has to be planned first so no seam lands where you walk through. Then it is cut tight round the hearth and scribed into the window return.

All those light and dark patches are the pile lying in different directions. Normal on a velvet like this, and it settles as the room gets used.
Come and stand on it in Lichfield.

Herringbone right through the ground floor 👌

Oak LVT dry back, fitted by our Lichfield team.

One centre line carrying the lot. Hall, lounge, through to the garden doors, with no bars splitting it up at any of the doorways. Dry back means every piece is stuck down individually, so the subfloor has to be flat across every room before a single plank goes on it.

That is why it sits solid and quiet underneath rather than giving as you walk over it.

We didn't fit this one... but we did fix it

Someone else clicked LVT straight down in a bathroom. Wrong product for a wet room, no ply underneath, nothing to stop water getting in. Six months later the joints had let go and it was lifting.

The customer rang us and our Lichfield team put it right. Old floor up, new ply screwed down for a flat solid base, then sheet vinyl over the top.

One piece, no joints for water to find. That is how a bathroom floor should have been done the first time.

If a floor has gone wrong on you, come and talk to us in Lichfield.

No margin to hide behind 👌

Berber loop carpet, in at Lichfield.
Wall to wall on a boxed-in flight means every tread gets cut tight to both sides, and the loop has to be pulled hard over each nosing or it opens up on the edge and you see it from the bottom.

A tight loop takes stair traffic and holds its shape where a softer pile flattens first.

Knocked a wall through, took the carpets up, and now the house echoes? 🔊

Hard floors bounce sound with nothing to absorb it. Carpet and a decent underlay upstairs takes the thud out of a landing, and acoustic underlay under LVT or wood cuts the click of shoes and the noise carrying to the room below.

Soft where you sit, hard where you walk. Come and talk it through at Lichfield.

Panels, not planks 👀

Versailles panel parquet in natural oak, in at Lichfield.

Each panel is a woven square framed by its own border, so the grid has to run dead square to the room before a single one goes down. Get the first panel wrong and every cut at the skirting goes with it.

Real oak means you can sand it back and refinish it years later.

Come and see it in Lichfield.

Look at that brass strip running the border 👀

Invictus Maximus in Chocolate Oak herringbone, fitted by our Lichfield team.

Small cloakroom, and nearly every piece is a cut. Border mitred round the whole room with a brass strip inlaid inside it, then scribed tight round the basin pedestal and behind the pan. The border has to hold dead straight or that brass line shows up every wobble.

Herringbone in a downstairs loo gives you the pattern with no worry about splashes.

Four things on a new carpet that look like faults and aren't 👀

Shading that moves as you walk past it. A single tuft standing up, which you snip and never pull. Dents from furniture, which an ice cube sorts. And the new carpet smell, which goes with a window open.

Anything else worrying you, ask us at Lichfield.
