That Beautiful Fabric Isn't Necessarily the Right One for Your Sofa

It's easy to fall in love with a fabric when you see it in a sample book. The colour is perfect, the texture feels wonderful, and you can already picture it in your living room.

But before making a decision, it's worth thinking about how the fabric will actually be used.

A decorative cushion, an occasional chair and a family sofa all have quite different demands.

For frequently used seating, durability and cleaning requirements are particularly important. Different fabrics have different levels of resistance to abrasion, and some materials need more careful maintenance than others.

There's also the practical side of colour and pattern. A small sample can look quite different when used across a large piece of furniture, especially where the design has a pronounced repeat.

Then comes the enjoyable part – coordinating the fabric with the room.

Sometimes a contrasting cushion or upholstered chair can bring together colours already present in your curtains, wallpaper or carpet without changing the whole scheme.

A Glazed Porch That's More Comfortable Throughout the Year

We all love the natural light that large windows bring into our homes, but extensively glazed areas can present a challenge.

In summer, direct sunshine can make them surprisingly hot. In winter, the glass can become a significant source of heat loss.

This recent installation by Roger Davis Interiors provides a practical solution.

We've fitted a Honeycell blind on a Coulisse system supplied by Nantmor Blinds, carefully selected to suit this fully glazed porch.

The clever part is hidden inside the fabric.

Rather than being made from a single flat layer, Honeycell blinds have a honeycomb-shaped construction containing pockets of air. These provide an additional insulating layer between the room and the glazing.

During winter, this can help retain warmth. In summer, lowering the blind provides shade and can help reduce unwanted solar heat gain.

It's also a lovely example of how a functional blind can look attractive. The subtle fabric colour works particularly well with the contemporary black window frames.

Beautiful Curtains That Let the Light In

Not every window needs heavy curtains, particularly when you have a large glazed area that brings so much natural light into your home.

These photographs are from a recent installation for one of our loyal customers featuring a Silent Gliss Wave system with a lovely patterned JAB sheer fabric.

What makes this combination work so well is the balance between appearance and practicality.

The sheer fabric gently filters the daylight, providing shade and a little more privacy without closing the room off from the outside. The Silent Gliss Wave system creates beautifully regular folds, allowing the fabric to hang naturally and maintain its shape.

We particularly like how the blue and neutral tones in the fabric introduce pattern and interest without overwhelming the clean, contemporary interior.

Of course, selecting sheer curtains involves more than choosing a pattern. The fabric's transparency, the width of the window, the curtain fullness and the track system all influence the finished result.

One of the most satisfying things in this business is when a customer keeps coming back.

We have supplied various Luxaflex® PowerView® blinds throughout this customer's home over a number of years, and this latest project called for three 25mm Venetian blinds.

Venetians were chosen for a very practical reason: flexibility. You can position the blind at different heights and alter the angle of the slats, giving much finer control over light, privacy and the view outside than simply having a blind open or closed.

There was plenty of thought given to appearance too. The colour chosen for the slats works extremely well with the existing window frames, giving the finished installation a clean, coordinated look.

PowerView makes controlling all three straightforward, while a transformer provides the power so there are no blind batteries to routinely replace.

And apparently the new blinds went down rather well. Shortly afterwards we received this message:

“After the excitement of the sitting room I am confirming our acceptance of the estimate for the external blind.”

So the next project will be a substantial external blind across the patio doors!

We've picked two different window styles and would love to know which you prefer.

🅰️ Blinds – Neat, practical and beautifully tailored to the window. Roman blinds are particularly lovely when you want to introduce fabric without full-length curtains.

🅱️ Curtains – Soft folds, beautiful fabrics and that lovely sense of warmth they can bring to a room.

We've spent more than 60 years helping people choose window furnishings at Roger Davis Interiors, and one thing we've learnt is that there isn't a right answer for every room.

Sometimes a blind is ideal. Sometimes curtains make the room. And sometimes combining the two works wonderfully.

Curtains (or Roman Blinds )and wallpaper do not need exactly matching patterns to belong in the same room. Often the more useful connection is a shared colour, with one design taking the lead and the other giving it space. Look at this Pure Edit image of fabric and wallpaper
Compare the fabric folded as it will appear in the curtains or blind, alongside a wallpaper sample large enough to show the repeat. Two small flat samples can hide the scale of both designs. Include the sofa, rug or headboard if those are staying.
