Just landed! Have you seen the new birds in the Shoreline flock?

We’re delighted to welcome Katy Malone as our September featured artist, with her handmade bird sculptures now available to buy in the gallery. Some of you may know Katy from her Barra Birdies workshops, where she shares her love of birds and shows you how to make your own paper-clay birds

I love this photo of the gallery set against that golden island sky — it looks like a painting!

The changing seasons here in North Uist bring such incredible light, and it made me think of this lovely Claude Monet quote:

“The light constantly changes, and that alters the atmosphere and beauty of things every minute.”

It got me thinking about how lovely it would be to see the gallery painted at different times of the year, with all the changes in light and colour. Much like Monet did, painting the same scenes again and again as the seasons and light changed.

Who else thinks the gallery would make quite a good muse? 😊

💙 A big hello to all my new followers!

I’ve noticed lots of new faces here recently, so I thought I’d say hello and share 5 things you might not know about my pottery…🏺

1. 🌊I live and work on North Uist, where the coastline and landscape inspire my pottery.

2. 🐚 I’m a beachcomber too! I spend lots of time walking the beaches of Uist and Barra, collecting natural treasures like cowries, whelk and scallop shells and dried kelp, which I use to create textures in my clay.

3. 🔥 I love experimenting with firing and use electric kilns as well as peat firing in an old gas bottle. Each firing brings its own character to the finished pieces.

4. 🌿 My glazes have a family connection using natural rock sediments from my family croft in North Uist, which was once worked by my grandmother, to create some of my glazes. It’s lovely to have that connection to the land.

5. 🖐️ I’ve been working with clay for over 20 years. I work entirely by hand and don’t use a potter’s wheel. I make my own moulds and texture tools.

A little appreciation post for North Uist ❤️

I’m lucky to have so much inspiration right on my doorstep here on North Uist. The landscape and beaches all play a part. One of my favourite things to do is walk along the beaches looking for little treasures such as cowries, whelks, limpets, seaweed, scallop shells and mermaid’s purses to use in my ceramics.

The whelk shells are a particular favourite. I love the pattern they leave in the clay, as it looks a bit like an ammonite fossil.

We’re delighted to have a selection of Kirsty Macleod’s IsleKnit designs here at Shoreline Stoneware Gallery.

Born and brought up on North Uist, Kirsty’s designs are inspired by the ever-changing colours of its landscapes and seascapes. She creates all her own patterns and hand-knits each piece herself, with designs that celebrate her island home and heritage.

Pop in, have a browse and discover your favourite — whether it’s a cosy hat, a colourful cowl or something to keep the chill at bay.

I’m delighted to shine the spotlight once again on Corinna Krause of Sollasbooks. I featured her beautiful handmade bookbinding kits here before, and this time I’m excited to share that Corinna also runs bookbinding workshops right here at Shoreline Stoneware Gallery.

Join Corinna for a creative evening and learn how to create your own beautiful, hand-sewn journal. No experience needed, and all materials are provided.

Her handmade bookbinding kits are also available in the gallery – a lovely creative project to take home.
