Gallery Marquess is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by London-based artist Lizii Chan, opening this week.

Bringing together works from different periods of Chan’s practice, the exhibition traces the development of a deeply personal visual language shaped by memory, mythology and the subconscious. Working primarily through painting, Chan constructs symbolic worlds inhabited by elongated figures, hybrid beings and archetypal forms. These recurring characters appear suspended between states, moving across the boundaries of the human and the otherworldly, vulnerability and power, concealment and revelation.

Chan’s paintings emerge from experiences and emotions that resist direct articulation. Through bold colour, simplified forms and precise contours, she transforms internal states into psychological landscapes. Familiar symbols become ambiguous, while theatrical compositions unfold like fragments of dreams or forgotten rituals. Each work holds a tension between clarity and mystery, inviting the viewer to enter a space in which fantasy and reality, the visible and invisible, coexist.

Rather than offering fixed narratives, Chan’s works remain open to individual interpretation. Painting becomes a threshold through which memory can be reimagined, hidden fears confronted and moments of transformation made visible.

Agriel's Sympatheia was born as a project that is both personal healing and a form of revenge. At its very root, the photograph represents the cyclical nature of trauma, healing and rebirth—while referencing a story that relates to St Agnes's martyrdom.

The works were created during a turbulent time in the artist's life, during her solo travels and finally in the forests of Agriel's homeland, Latvia. Here her practice evolved the ideas of how personal feminine experience is inextricably linked to larger social and historical systems, something her project 'Sympathiea' explores in depth.

Rooted in surreal self-portraiture and intimate collaborations, Agriel's work becomes both ritual and revelation, a space where pain is transmuted, and new ways of being are imagined and created.

Oops! — Found, Fixed, Formed

This exhibition explores transformation through upcycling. Discarded materials and overlooked fragments become the starting point for new forms.

“Oops!” marks the unexpected moment. Objects are then found, reworked, and formed into something new. The process values change, repair, and imagination over waste.

Nothing is final—everything can become something else.

Context In Flux…

The artist approaches the medium of sculptural ceramics not as a vessel of certainty but as a carrier of flux, transformation, and ambiguity.

Rejecting rigid structures and predetermined forms, this approach creates space for the material’s memory and instinctive tendencies, making the process of making more visible than the final result itself.

Fueled by discursive exploration, the artist’s mode of production does not reduce ceramics to the sole creation of objects. Instead, it transforms the practice into a living surface through which thought itself can diverge.

Each form subverts expectations of a predetermined composition's repetition, surfacing as an individualised, intuitive encounter arising from the moment. For this reason, the works do not present a fixed meaning. Rather, they propose a multilayered experience that continuously shifts and is reconfigured by the viewer's presence.

Gallery Marquess’s historical space, which has quietly endured for over a century, undergoes a radical transformation in this exhibition curated by Fahrettin Aykut. By concealing all clues and traces of the past, it is rendered anonymous and neutral through black intervention. Stripped of its history, the space becomes a silent witness, opening a dialogue between the visible and the hidden, the past and the present.

In this suspended setting, works shaped around womanhood and space, from depictions of 19th-century working girls to dark architectural drawings and ghostly portraits of women, are recontextualized within the space’s anonymity.

What is the identity of a space? And what unfolds when that identity disappears?
