To the naked eye, African and Brazilian Paraiba tourmalines are indistinguishable, and even under a microscope it is hard to tell the difference. The Gemmological Institute of America, which grades and evaluates gemstones of all kinds, states: “Nigerian and Mozambique tourmalines, which show saturated blue-to-green colours, cannot be distinguished from the Brazilian material by standard gemmological testing.” Only quantitative chemical testing, it says, will show up differences in the stones. The remains of a 55,000-year-old Neanderthal fetus offer new insight into their decline. While they were discovered in southern Germany between 1968 and 1970, the bones were not formally identified until 20 years ago.
