I'm Johanna — founder of Speaking of Interiors, a residential interior design studio in Clapham. Since 2020 I've been designing homes across South West and South East London: whole-house renovations, single rooms, and everything between.

It's a solo practice, deliberately. The person you meet at the first consultation is the person choosing your worktop, chasing your sofa delivery and standing in your hallway on installation day. I'm guiding you every step of the way.

Swipe through for what I do, how the process works, and what it's actually like to work with me. A few of my favourite rooms are in there too.

Two things I believe, if you only read this far:

**Function comes first** A beautiful room that doesn't work for how you live is bad design. The layout gets solved before anything gets chosen.

**No house style.** Your home should look like you, not like me. I gather your references at the first meeting and design from there — which is why my projects don't all look the same, and that's the point.

If you've got a project brewing — a first flat, a family home, one room that's never quite worked — book a **free consultation call** through the link in my bio. I'd love to hear what you're planning.

The main ensuite, top to bottom

The stone does the talking in here, so everything else keeps quiet.

The vanity is made to order — two integrated basins cut from one run of Breche Capraia porcelain by Porcelain Tiles® , honed rather than polished, with the stone carried up the sides so the veining wraps the whole block. The same stone lines the bath, the wall behind it and the window reveal, so it reads as one piece rather than a series of panels.

Against that, texture instead of shine: Zellinge tiles by Mandarin Stone with a soft uneven glaze, warm grey walls above the stone line so the room never goes cold, and a matte travertine-look floor.

The brass is aged, not polished. Brassware by GESSI , so the stone deck stays clear and wipes down in one pass. Slim fluted sconces by Pooky on the mirror for the evenings. A hand shower at the bath. Reeded glass on the shower screen — privacy where it's wanted, without losing any light.

Daylight through the sash window, and nothing in the room competing with it.

The main ensuite in a full four-storey renovation of a Victorian terrace in Balham.

Four samples against a wall. That's where this bathroom started.

It's the part of the job clients find hardest to believe in – you're holding a tile, a scrap of stone and a little square of brass, and being asked to picture a finished room. Trust the process is a terrible phrase, but it is genuinely what's being asked.

Here's what those three became: floor in ivory trevertine porcelain and half wall cladding and a vanity with an integrated basin in Breche Capraia porcelain with a honed finish by .co.uk. Zellige tiles by behind it, soft and slightly uneven, so the wall has texture instead of glare. Aged brass brassware by and a slim brass sconce by and ceiling light by for warmth. Bespoke flutted glass doors and a pale oak joinery beside it for everything a bathroom has to hide.

The lesson: pick a hero and let everything else support it. The stone is the star here – so the tile is quiet, the joinery is quiet, and the brass just warms it all up.

Would you have seen it from the samples? Be honest 🤍

Ready for popcorn 🍿

The front room of a Balham house, finished. Small, south-facing, and now the room the whole family ends up in.

A few things worth pointing out as you swipe:

◾️ The sofa is bespoke — built to the shape of the bay, and deliberately deep. Comfort was the brief, so the fabric is Très Chic Beach by Perennials | Fabrics, Rugs & Wallcoverings, which is properly stain-resistant. Family life with a pale sofa, without the anxiety. ◾️ The blinds are bespoke too, in Santa Fe Pueblo Stripe by Osborne & Little — the warm stripe is what stops all that cream reading as flat. ◾️ The ottoman does three jobs: coffee table, footstool, extra seat. In a room this size, everything has to earn its place. ◾️ Pale oak joinery around the chimney breast keeps the TV from being the main event, and the light herringbone floor carries straight through from the hall. ◾️ Walls in Skimming Stone — warm enough to feel soft in the evening, quiet enough to let the green and the wood do the talking.

Warm, layered, and built for how this family actually spends a Sunday. That's the whole job.

The details: ◾️ Bespoke bay sofa in Très Chic Beach — Perennials | Fabrics, Rugs & Wallcoverings ◾️ Bespoke roman blinds in Santa Fe Pueblo Stripe — Osborne & Little ◾️ Green cushions — OKA ◾️ Round ottoman — Soho Home ◾️ Walls in Skimming Stone — Farrow & Ball ◾️ Aintree Oak herringbone flooring — The Natural Wood Floor Company ◾️ TV unit in light Casella Oak laminate — EGGER UK

Swipe to see what a bay window is actually for ✨

The before: a small front room with a dark floor, a grey-blue built-in, two black recliners facing a TV, and a bay window treated as a dead corner. Comfortable enough — but cold, and much smaller-feeling than it needed to be.

What we changed and why:

◾️ A bespoke sofa wrapping the bay. Made to the exact curve of the window, deep enough to properly sink into. It turns the coldest part of the room into the best seat in the house and frees up the rest of the floor.

◾️ Warm floor instead of dark. Aintree Oak herringbone, running through from the hallway — light bounces instead of getting swallowed.

◾️ Warm walls. Skimming Stone, soft and forgiving, with the black picture-rail line gone.

◾️ Oak joinery around the chimney breast in place of the dark cabinetry — storage and a TV that sit quietly rather than dominating.

◾️ Layers instead of hard edges. Striped roman blinds, a green velvet ottoman, textured cushions, throws.
A small room doesn't need to be a plain one. It needs furniture made to fit it.

◾️ Bespoke bay sofa in Très Chic Beach (stain-resistant) — Perennials | Fabrics, Rugs & Wallcoverings

See the design process.

Cold grey box ➝ the room you don't want to leave 🍿

This is the small front room of a Balham house — the TV room, the Sunday-night room.

Before: dark floor, grey walls, black leather, a bay window doing nothing at all.

The whole thing turned on one decision: a bespoke sofa built to wrap around the bay. Deep, soft, and shaped to the room rather than shoved against it — which is how a small room ends up seating the whole family instead of two people and a footstool.

Then we warmed everything up. Pale herringbone oak in place of the dark boards, Skimming Stone on the walls, oak joinery around the fireplace, and a green velvet ottoman you can put your feet on.

Same footprint. Completely different room.

An entrance that actually holds a family's stuff — and still looks like this ✨

Swipe through the details. This is one wall of bespoke oak joinery in a Balham house, designed around what this family genuinely needed somewhere to put:

◾️ Full-height cupboards either side — coats, shoes, the sports kit, the things you don't want to look at
◾️ A slim console with two drawers for keys, post and the daily debris
◾️ Two woven stools tucked underneath, so there's somewhere to sit and pull your boots off
◾️ Open niches for the bits you do want to look at — a frame, a candle, a plant
◾️ A mirror behind the console, bouncing daylight down a narrow hall (and one last check before you leave)
◾️ Brass sconces and a fluted glass ceiling light for warmth after dark
◾️ Herringbone oak underfoot, carried through the black metal glazed door into the kitchen

The whole point of joinery is that it earns its space. A shallow console would have looked lovely and solved nothing. This one gives to the family a proper landing spot at the door — which is the difference between a tidy hallway and a hallway you have to tidy.

Before and after — the hallway.

Swipe for the before. Grey tile, grey walls, a pew by the door, and shoes on the floor because there was nowhere else for them to go. Nothing wrong with it exactly. It just wasn't doing anything.

Here's what changed:

◾️ The whole wall became bespoke oak joinery — full-height storage for coats, shoes and the everyday pile-up
◾️ A slim console with drawers for keys and post, with two woven stools tucked underneath
◾️ A mirror above it, to throw daylight back down a narrow space
◾️ Herringbone oak flooring in place of dark tile, carried through to the kitchen so the ground floor reads as one home
◾️ A black metal glazed door to the kitchen — keeps the light, keeps the noise where it belongs

The lesson I'd take from this one: your hallway is the first and last thing you see every day. It deserves more than a hook on the wall.

What I see. What you get.

Hallways usually are the room everyone forgets to design. They get the leftover space, the leftover budget and a coat rack that gave up years ago. This one was a long grey corridor with nowhere for a family to put anything - so we gave the whole wall over to bespoke joinery. Full-height storage for coats, shoes and all the rest of it, a slim console with drawers, two woven stools tucked underneath for putting shoes on, and a mirror to pull light down the hall. Herringbone oak underfoot, running straight through to the kitchen.

The entrance to a full four-floor renovation between Balham and Wandsworth Common.

Would you give up a bit of hallway width for proper storage? I would, every single time.

Hi, I'm Johanna. It's been a while since I properly introduced myself, so here goes.

I'm the founder of Speaking of Interiors, a residential interior design studio based in Clapham, London. I've been designing homes across London since 2020 — and it's just me. The person you meet at the first consultation is the same person choosing your worktop, chasing your sofa delivery and styling the shelves at the end.

WHAT I DO
- Full home renovations and refurbishments
- Room-by-room transformations — kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms
- Space planning, joinery, lighting, FF&E and styling
- Online design, if you're further afield or happy to run the works yourself

WHERE I WORK
Clapham, Balham, Wandsworth, Battersea — and across Central, South West and South East London.

WHAT IT'S LIKE TO WORK WITH ME
- Function comes first. A beautiful room that doesn't work for how you actually live is bad design.
- No house style. Your home should look like you, not like me. - Straight talk about money. I buy furniture and finishes at trade, which usually saves clients 10-20% on their spend — often covering a good part of my fee.
- Flexible collaborative approach. We shape the scope around your priorities as we go.

I design real homes for real people.

If you've got a project brewing, book a consultation through the link in my bio. I'd love to hear what you're planning ✨
