The difference between a cheap quote and a proper one isn't always about margin.

Often it's about what's been left out.

Why does microcement have a minimum project charge — even for a small bathroom or a single feature wall?

It's a question we get regularly, and it deserves a clear answer.

Microcement is not priced the way standard floor tiles or paint are priced. You cannot simply take a square metre rate, apply it to the area, and arrive at the full cost — because the cost of a professional microcement installation is not just about the size of the surface.

Every project — large or small — goes through the same fundamental process. A trained installer travels to site with a carefully selected product system. The substrate is assessed and prepared. Primer goes on. Then base coats, with the right drying time between each one. Then the microcement itself, applied in the correct sequence. Then sealing — with the sealer specified for that surface and environment. Then curing. Then handover and aftercare guidance.

That process does not compress because the wall is 3 square metres instead of 15. The preparation still needs to happen. The coats still need their drying time. The sealing still needs to be done correctly.

The minimum charge is the honest cost of executing that process properly. It is not a penalty for having a small space. It is a baseline that reflects what a professional specialist installation actually requires, regardless of scale.

What can you do if your project is small? The most practical answer is often to think about combining surfaces. A cloakroom floor and walls together. A feature wall and a connecting hallway. More surfaces in a single visit tend to bring the effective cost per square metre closer to the standard rate — and often result in a more cohesive, finished look throughout the space.

What does microcement actually cost in London?

It's one of the most searched questions we see — and one of the least clearly answered.

So here it is, straightforwardly:

Supply and installation across London and the Home Counties typically sits between £80 and £160 per square metre. Where your project lands within that range depends on several things: the size and location of the surface, the condition of the substrate, whether the area is wet or dry, what preparation is needed, and what system and finish is specified.

Wet areas — bathrooms, wet rooms, shower walls — cost more because proper waterproofing is part of the specification. That's not a premium. It's what doing the job correctly looks like.

Smaller projects also tend to have a minimum charge. A 3m² splashback and a 12m² floor can sit at the same base price if the smaller job falls below the threshold. We'd rather tell you that upfront than have it come as a surprise later.

If you're comparing quotes, the most useful question to ask isn't "who's cheapest?" It's "what does this price include?"

Preparation, system selection, waterproofing where required, sealing — these are the stages that determine how the surface performs long term. They should be in the quote.
