Pieces of Time

Pieces of Time Welcome to Pieces of Time, a family-run antique shop in Mayfair since 1973. Grays Antiques, Mayfair. Johnny is married to Linda and they have five children.

Specialising in luxury pocket watches, we offer expert advice and a reliable service. Founded by Jonathan Wachsmann in 1973, Pieces of Time has been the foremost name in the antique timepiece market for over 40 years. Alan Grant joined the business in 1983, sharing Johnny’s love for antique watches and innovation. Our mail order catalogue was amongst the first to reach collectors and dealers not o

nly in the UK but worldwide. We then launched antique-watch.com in 1995 when “online shopping” was in its infancy. From launch, our site quickly became the largest specialist antique site on the Internet – a position it retains to this day, nearly two decades later. Since those early days, people have become more accustomed to shopping online and our catalogue is well established. To date we have published 96 catalogues and, for ease of reference, our site lists every watch we have ever sold, accompanied by over 17,000 images. We have hundreds of pocket watches on display in-store, and hundreds more movements are available from our extensive collection. Our shop is located in London's Grays antiques complex, home to one of the world’s largest and most diverse collections of fine antiques and collectors’ items, with many specialist stores. The complex is situated in London's Mayfair only a few yards from Bond Street Station and close to Oxford Street and the world-renowned Claridges Hotel. Pieces of Time is a member of the British Antique Dealers Association (BADA) and the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors (NAWCC). We attend many antique and watch fairs around the world, meeting with our international clients who may be interested in specific items for their collection or looking to sell items to Pieces of Time. All items appearing on our website are guaranteed to be in full working order and as described. Customer satisfaction is very important to us and we pride ourselves in ensuring that each of our customers is delighted with their purchase. We are also pleased to offer our part exchange guarantee – we’ll give you the full purchase price of your items to be exchanged for any items purchased from our store or website. All items are shipped in our specially designed Airboxes and are fully insured from the moment they leave our store until they safely reach their destination. Standard shipping is free on items over £500 and a flat fee of £20 is charged on all other items. Worldwide delivery is available and FEDEX can be arranged for an extra charge of £30 upon request. Who's Who at Pieces of Time
Johnny Wachsmann began his career in horology in 1971 and started trading independently in 1973. Johnny is the proprietor of Pieces of Time and responsible for purchasing the pieces that appear in our catalogue and on our website. Alan Grant became interested in antique watches in 1970 and joined the Pieces of Time family in 1983. Alan is predominantly involved in watch restoration and producing the Pieces of Time catalogues. He is also a technology enthusiast, particularly within the antique trade, and is the webmaster of antique-watch.com. Alan is married to Alison and they have three children. Marc Wachsmann has been working at Pieces of Time since 2000 and is Johnny’s eldest son. Marc is responsible for serving our customers in-store, responding to our large volume of email queries and sourcing new items for the website and catalogue. Marc will be assuming responsibility for Pieces of Time when Johnny starts winding down his involvement. Lynette Joseph has worked at Pieces of Time for 30 years as Johnny's PA. Lynette also co-ordinates our catalogue and website and ensures that all orders reach their destination with zero fuss. Running the office when Johnny is away on business trips, Lynette is the lynch pin of our office. Lynette is married to Peter and they have three children.

“Admiral” Nelson Wachsmann is the office’s very lazy British Bulldog. He spends most of the day asleep under the desk, occasionally wakes to greet customers and is very popular in the Grays complex. Any customers who can manage to get him to go for a walk will receive a 10% discount.

A lovely piece from the new catalogue and the photos don't do it justice.

An 18th century Swiss verge in two colour gold and enamel pair cases. The back is a polychrome enamel portrait of a lady, stones set into the enamel itself to represent her jewellery, surrounded by translucent dark blue enamel over an engine turned ground with a white metal mask laid over the top, also set with stones. The front bezel a row of clear stones. Two colour gold decoration throughout. Inside, a full plate fire gilt movement, fusee and chain, with decorative stone set pierced silver hands on a signed white enamel dial.

The kind of piece you need to hold to fully appreciate. Come in and see it!

This is what a digital watch looked like in 1931.

At twelve o'clock there's a gold framed aperture. The hour sits inside it and when the moment comes, it jumps, completely instantaneously. Below that, a rectangular gold frame holds a small minute chapter, and beneath that a subsidiary dial running continuous seconds in Arabic numerals with blue steel hands.

Swiss lever, signed Chronometre Election, 16 jewels. Still in its original Morocco and blue velvet presentation case.

Come in and see it.

What's the oldest watch in your collection?

One of the earliest watches at Pieces of Time is this fine French verge bearing the Medici coat of arms. A member of the family was probably the first owner of the watch, which at the time, could only be afforded by nobility. Now it is looking for it's next custodian!

Signed: F Houlliere a Laval
Circa: 1630
Dimensions: 40 x 52 x 24 mm

What's the strangest shape you've ever seen a watch in?

This extraordinary piece circa 1630, signed J. Gespard Duval, is shaped as a crucifix and would have likely been worn around the neck by a bishop. A similar example exists in the Metropolitan Museum, New York. The rock crystal is in near-perfect condition which is remarkable given how fragile this piece is. We have it's beautiful presentation case to thank!

Fun fact: How to tell the difference between rock crystal and glass? Hold it against your skin. Unlike glass, crystal stays ice cold to the touch.

An incredible early timepiece where faith meets function. See this and other horological treasures at Pieces of Time, Stand 111 . Enquiries: [email protected]

When soldiers needed hands-free timekeeping in WWI, the wristwatch was born, and Longines led the way.

This early trench watch features the iconic winged logo, enamel dial, and original wire lugs. Pictured with its antique advertisement from 'Military Timepieces 1890-1990' by Z.M. Wesolowski. Wearable history in excellent condition.
