CIPS Excellence in Procurements & Supply - BEST SUPPLIER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT INITIATIVE

Design MAD are really proud to have supported the RDG over the past year, with design and branding for the ‘Welcome Point’ trials. Feedback from over 700,000 passengers highlighted a gap in their existing customer journey for obtaining assistance.

Welcome Points are a beacon point they include many accessibility features, we had great fun in developing the design, branding and graphic communication, we also visited over 60 stations in the UK to pinpoint suitable trial locations. Well done to Steve Lamey and his team, a well-deserved win.

Finishing touches to Hook & Son Raw Dairy designed by us at Borough Market, the only place in the UK where you can buy Raw Gelato and I have to say it’s incredible. First day soft opening but been really busy and stocking up fast as it goes out it gets bought. Well done to clients Stephen Hook of Hook & Son.

CREATING CLARITY… Last project. It’s really gratifying when your design makes an enormous difference, Liverpool Central Station, the busiest subsurface station in Liverpool with 16m passengers a year, here are some of our scheme stats, not easy given the site was landlocked, a live railway below restricting structures and the air-rights sold off. But we managed a 42% bigger concourse, 45% more ticket gates, new 240sqm convenience store and ticket shop, 320% more daylight, 90% more public toilets, plus 650sqm modular staff offices and it met BREEAM Very Good. The original station was difficult to navigate with multiple entrances, a bright yellow orientation wall in MerseyRail colours was added, split gate-lines helped control crowding with dedicated in and out routes, we formed clear sight lines to all egress points, there is a natural order to the passengers process, with maximum exposure to the retail unit.

DESIGN COLLABORATION… We can’t take the design credit for this , Arlene Ellis of So-Spaces did all the hard work, we collaborated with Arlene on the construction information and the ultra-fine detail that client Knight Dragon require on all their developments. This is Tides Clubhouse facility on Greenwich Peninsular next to the O2 primarily for runners using their 5k trail around the Greenwich Peninsular development. Collaboration can be a real pleasure, just experiencing the way Arlene approached this design is refreshing, the lines the details every single junction point must be thought through it is perfection and for us we never stop learning. Thank you Arlene for this collaboration, I really love this project.

BRAND ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATION… Carrying on from the brand development on the 17th this illustrates the brand environmental application bringing it into the 3D environment, it has to work on both levels print and media and instore application. The power of graphics in environments is immense and very cost effective, retail has known this for a long while it is a great way to change the look of an environment at minimal cost to keep interest and attraction.

BRAND APPLICATION… The brand has to look good from print and multi media right up to venue application, as we alluded to yesterday designers often specialise in the former but it is the environmental application that brings the story right through into the experience that adds so much additional power both have to work seamlessly, we do both, more to come on this one.

BRANDING… Critical to any venture, this is a quick fire hit of brands that we have designed and developed to show the breadth of our design adaptability, we don’t have a house style we design what we believe is right for the job, the critical thing about brands is they must represent envelope, reinforce and sell the product, doing their job in 2D flat media but tomorrow we will be showing the importance of how they manifest into 3D and applications in the built environment. Agencies normally specialise in 2D our strength is that we are primarily 3D thinkers and that’s rare to get the cross over.

INFORMATION… The pod shape was a given but it’s how we treated it that brings it to life, the East Coast estate had red and yellow brick stations, we selected a red and grey version to make the pods stand out. The graphics already started to communicate with customers as they approached, we still really like this project it’s bold but welcoming at the same time.
