As designers, it is easy to get stuck in literal translations of ideas. We often take a brief and interpret it exactly as it appears on the surface, but the most interesting design work usually happens when you push your ideas a little further.

Thinking outside the box is not about creating something that must be practical or real. It is about letting your imagination move a few steps past the boundaries of reality to see what you uncover. Every now and then you end up with something usable, and sometimes you do not, but the point is that you free yourself up creatively. This is where fresh ideas come from.

I used to give discovery calls for free. I thought it would help me practise speaking to clients, build my confidence and build trust help more people say yes. Instead, it created the opposite effect. The people who booked calls were rarely the ones who moved forward – instead they wanted reassurance, ideas, direction, confidence and often a whole plan, but very few had any intention of becoming clients!

I was training people to see my time as something they could take without commitment. The took my confidence and they NEVER, EVER signed up! NOT ONE! (why would they when I’d give everything away for free…)

If your free calls are draining your energy, it might be time to rethink the way you onboard clients and run your projects. There is more to running projects than discovery calls.

There’s more to pricing than just numbers, but that doesn’t mean you can’t master it. Start with one service, perfect your process and ensure you’re using both a pricing system and a strategy.

Remember, your prices should reflect your value, your time and your goals (not someone else’s assumptions or expectations!) Don’t compare yourself to other designers or guess what clients can afford. Pricing is personal, professional and strategic!
