A story about friendship and the fun things we get up to… my friend Emily had a bag of dried feusag-liath (old man’s beard) lichen in her garage ready to dye some yarn 🧶 and asked if I might be interested in having some when it was done. Well, of course I couldn’t resist! Dyed in Nova Scotia, travelled to Scotland, knitted in Edinburgh and finished south of the border. The first pattern I tried left me frustrated, as even though I had worked this pattern several times before, it just didn’t feel right, so went for a simple structural patten with eyelet detail. Rather pleased with it. Mòran taing, E. x

4 Research based reasons to teach your child to knit:

1. Improved self-control.
A 2023 study asked elementary school children to complete inhibition-control tasks after a short knitting session. Researchers found the knitting group performed better on both emotional and non emotional self regulation tasks compared to the control group.

2.Better attention & focus.
A 2025 study found that participants performed better on attention tests after just 20 minutes of crochet. Researchers also observed changes in brain networks linked to attention.

3.Stronger learning skills.
Knitting combines counting, sequencing, pattern recognition, reading instructions, and problem solving all within one activity, which is why fiber crafts are often discussed in hands on education research.

4.Supports motor coordination.
Knitting requires sustained hand movement, visual tracking, coordination, and concentration at the same time. Developmental research has consistently linked fine motor development with broader cognitive development in children.

Sometimes it feels too much to concentrate on a lace pattern at the end of the day, and after all, knitting is supposed to be an enjoyable pastime! I have knitted the pattern I have been trying to focus on several times before, but despite stitch markers I am about to unravel this for the fourth time. I have another pattern lined up. Wish me luck… 🍀
