🔥Sam is forming flashings for the new roof in Brook Green.

🔥Did you know that lead has been used in buildings for more than 2000 years? First by the Romans for their aqueducts, then in Medieval times - in churches and cathedrals - through to the modern times.
🔥 It’s thrilling to keep this ling tradition alive!

Best small armchairs on a budget.
I did a bit of research for a recent project, where we needed something small to complement a rather big - and very expensive! - sofa.

1. a rattan armchair is always a good choice, specially if paired with a formal/serious/a bit too dark sofa. Think of it as the straw bag which brings Summer in your Winter wardrobe. This is only 63cm deep, for a generous 81cm width! Ikea Stockholm 2025.

2. A bit mid century modern, slim and sleek. Would be a perfect reading chair or if you need something with a decent seat height. And it has a pretty back too, in case you want to place it in the middle of a room. By Laredoute, that untapped mine of good design at low cost.

3. I love almost everything about this classic Ikea piece designed in 1967 and now re-edited.
The swivel, the plump cushions, the tapered base. I am not mad about the corduroy fabric, but hey, let’s not ask for perfection at less than £200!

“What can go wrong in your business, you might mess up some cushions!”

That was a very silly (and machist and ignorant!) thing someone told us a while ago while discussing risks in our business.

Turns out we do much more than cushions:
we support people when they are buying a home, plan and design major refurbishments, help clients budget for their project, make sure the works are carried out well and in line with regulations, standards and planning requirements, collaborate with builders in London and remotely and another million things that I am too tired after a week of doing them to list them all!
And we do choose cushions too! 😜

Dar El Annabi in Sidi Boy Said.
A 18th century mansion, a family summer home till not long ago.
The best way to conclude our holiday in Tunisia: with the eyes full of colours and the mind full of ideas!

Is Djerba terribly overdeveloped?
I would not know.

🐟We stay on the west coast, in a 5 rooms hotel right on the shore. We have keys on our doors - on beautiful faded embroidered key holders - but nobody bothers locking the rooms nor the main gate.

🌴 In three days here the crowd on the beach has consisted of: a few seagulls, a number of starfish brought up by the tide, 2 horses and their manners and a guy who arrives every day at 4pm, swims for twenty minutes in the crystal clear shallow sea and always comes out with a broad smile and greets us with “cest magnifique!”.

🍊We eat in the village down the road - grilled seabass and cod, Tunisian salad, soup, shrimps stewed with onions and peppers, chips and dips - for about £35 for five.

🐙We peeled ourselves from our little Djerban paradise only to venture inland to Djerbahood and then for a quick visit to the main town Houmt Souk.
Djerbahood is a beautiful art project - street artist from all over the world created murals for a small village in the inland- and deserves its own entry-. When we visited we saw only two other tourists.

🌶️Houmt Souk is pleasant enough, but nothing to shout about, if one is familiar with North African market towns.
The masses from the big hotels must have left in the afternoon, as we did not see a single tourist.
The highlight of our visit was dinner at Essofra, on the way to the fort. Kind service, quirky atmosphere and an unforgettable octopus stew.
This - and long walks and ball games at low tide, plus memorable dawns and sunsets - was our break in Djerba.

Ksour hopping in South Tunisia.

⭕️ Ksour (sing. Ksar) are fortified buildings, often so big they form a village, built by Amazigh (Berber) populations.

⭕️In Dahar, they are often totally of partly built in the side of mountains, using existing or man made caves.

⭕️Ksour are an extraordinary example of architecture.
Perfectly integrated in the landscape- for defence they are often almost invisible from a distance - , they offer comfort in the harsh desert environment via clever ventilation, natural lighting and water collection.

⭕️As a system of private and communal spaces - with a capacity varying from just a few families to hundreds of inhabitants - they show us of how buildings can shape and sustain a way of life and community structure.

⭕️Nobody was ever alone in a ksar, nobody thought they could make it without the others.

My first 3 days in Tunisia.
🍊even under a torrential rain Tunis is a city of colours, from the doors in the medina to the random street art glimpsed from the taxi (download a local app and you can move easily and cheaply around town).
🤲 we were so lucky to catch the annual Salon De La Creation Artisanal! Modern Tunisian articraft, from pottery to textiles, perfumery to patisserie is inspiring and high quality, often rooted in traditions dating back thousands - not hundreds! - years.
🌴 we will come back to Tunis, but for now we are heading South.
First stop in Gabes, to visit the only coastal oasis in North Africa. Then on the road towards the Dahar, Amazigh (berber) country between mountains and desert.

🐪It’s been only 3 days, but seems a life away.
