Last month we ran the Naturalistic Floral Design Course - our first ever two week course and the only of its kind in London.

We’ve been busily working on the curriculum for this course since the beginning of the year. But in reality it is an amalgamation of over ten years’ experience designing, growing, photographing and learning about flowers - encapsulating our naturalistic design philosophy and all that we know and love about working seasonally.

For the past decade our studio has striven to distance itself from a wider floral culture at odds with nature, seeking new ways of practising the arrangement of flowers. Our aim through the AESME SCHOOL OF FLOWERS is to offer an educational alternative for those looking to do the same.

Thank you to all our brilliant students for filling the studio with your curiosity and creativity this past fortnight, you are the reason we do what we do!

Our next Naturalistic Floral Design Course will start on Tuesday 13 April 2027 with others in June and September - all the details can be found at aesme.co.uk.

We’re releasing a brand new online course next month all about naturalistic flower arranging - today’s seasonal demo was a deliciously autumnal concoction of pink elder leaves, tiny tomatoes on the vine and dahlias… And for our club members look out for a lovely little arrangement film going live tomorrow! 👀

Outtakes from our book Naturalistic Flowers: A Year of Plants, Places & People. For this chapter we travelled to Rungstedlund in Denmark to the home of Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), one of my favourite writers and a prolific flower arranger who created naturalistic bouquets for her home and parties using garden flowers and foraged materials from the surrounding countryside.

Day 8, the last day of the Naturalistic Design Course. This afternoon the students created an immersive installation at the studio. Gigantic stems of golden bamboo kindly gifted by Brian in Chiswick and majestic branches of cherry that we nabbed from some tree surgeons on the way to work! Alongside rosehips, Mexican sunflower, golden oats, elder and dried allium heads, all from the garden.
