Four worktop materials, what each one costs, and who it suits.

Swipe for the pros, the cons and the price per metre of compact laminate, quartz, Dekton, and Corian and HI-MACS.

If you want the quick version:
Young children and spills: quartz or compact laminate
Cooking every day: Dekton
Smooth, curved design: Corian or HI-MACS
Smaller budget: compact laminate

Prices are per metre, fitted, outside London. London adds 15 to 25%. Treat them as a guide until you have a written quote.

All four are engineered, which means they are made in a factory. Natural stone, like granite and marble, is in my next post.

Save this for when you start choosing, and send it to whoever is choosing with you.

Which one are you leaning towards?

One of the reasons people hire an interior designer isn't just to make things look good — it's to get access to choices they'd never find on their own.
The finish that surprises you. The material you wouldn't have thought to consider. The option that ends up being the one.
That's a big part of what I do.
This week at the Surface & Stone Show — finding exactly those things. For you.

Not every interior design project starts with a full renovation.
Sometimes it starts with one awkward corner, one unused wall, one dining area that feels unfinished, or one question:

“How can this space work better?”

For this dining and kitchen area, the brief was simple: create extra storage that could work as a breakfast pantry, support the dining zone, and still feel connected to the existing interior.

At this stage, I am not choosing the final handles, finishes or decorative details yet.
First, I look at the layout, proportions, geometry and how the furniture sits within the room.
Then I prepare a few concept options.
Each option answers the same problem in a different way:
more storage, lighter visual weight, more display space, stronger feature wall, or better everyday function.
Once the best direction is chosen, we can move into the next layer: materials, finishes, lighting, internal storage and technical detailing.
This is exactly why design does not always need to mean “a full house project”.
Sometimes you just need a clear solution for one part of your home — and that is still a design project.

If you have an awkward corner, unused wall, strange layout or one area that never quite works, send me a DM.

No project for me is “too small” if it solves a real problem in your home.

You've picked the colour. Bought the tester. Painted the wall.
And it still looks wrong.
That's not a coincidence. Colour shifts with light direction, time of day, and everything sitting around it. The same paint looks completely different in a north-facing room versus south. Under warm bulbs versus daylight.
Nobody tells you this. You're just expected to figure it out.
