A really honest and practical conversation at the yesterday, for our fellow designers on how to actually land a project - not the polished version we often see, but the real process behind it.
A few things that stayed with me:
First impressions matter. Respond quickly. Treat every enquiry as if it could become something meaningful.
But beyond that, projects are rarely won on portfolio alone. They’re built on trust and chemistry. Meeting clients in their home, reading the room, understanding the soft cues that tell you what someone really wants from their space.
It’s about showing professionalism while still being human. Introducing the team clearly, setting boundaries early and making sure the scope of works and briefing are properly signed off so everyone feels confident moving forward.
Case studies help clients see what’s possible. But reassurance, clarity and genuine connection are often what make someone say yes.
For emerging designers especially, the message was simple: the work doesn’t start with the design - it starts with how you listen, communicate and build rapport.
Practical, generous advice and a reminder that great projects begin with great relationships.
