Joinery is where a house keeps its secrets.

It decides what is shown and what is tucked away - the backlit niche that frames a single object, the wall that opens to a wine store, the door you would never find unless you knew it was there.

Across our projects it is often where the Red Thread runs most clearly: cabinetry made to the millimetre, and made to last. A drinks cabinet behind panelled doors, a games room lined in oak, a bed built into its own quiet architecture.

Swipe through some of our favourite joinery moments, and tell us which you’d live with.

Fresh surfaces.

We commissioned a new lacquered kitchen in a warm neutral using an age-less contemporary Shaker-style design.

The hero of the room was in fact the Dekton worktop and splashback. The softly textured waves are reminiscent of travertine, but impervious to the ravages of time, tabasco or turmeric.

Swipe to see the transformation.

Every project begins in SketchUp - it’s where our creativity starts.

It’s the quietest stage of a project, and the one we protect most - the imagination here is ours.

Every client presentation grows from this one grey model, styled to resonate with the client and to hold the Red Thread of the property.

Designing a room based on this incredible Colefax and Fowler’s signature print wallpaper.

We stretched it across velvet upholstery and printed onto wallpaper - so that a single pattern creates two different surfaces, two different moods, and a dialogue between them that runs through the room.

This is very much in the spirit of our Holland Park Villa - bringing both tradition and energy into the same room.

Judging the graduate show for the Interior Architecture course at was no quick decision.

The standard across the cohort was high - room after room of thoughtful, ambitious work, and every graduate should be proud.

After a lot of soul searching, I gave my prize to Ekaterina Kiseleva. Hers wasn’t the project that struck me hardest in the moment - it was the one I kept returning to. She takes one of our earliest technologies, the book, and uses design to bring us back into a space that makes us better people. Design as a life force, bringing something back into a community that really needed it.

At Tollgard we believe thoughtful design can make people’s lives better. I couldn’t think of a more worthy winner.

Thank you to every graduate who took part, and to Inchbald for having me. Congratulations, Ekaterina!

The moment a scheme becomes real life.

Every room in this Holland Park Villa has a job to do. In the children’s bedroom, that job is to feel safe, specific, and full of possibility.

The window seat was one of the first ideas on the table - a place to tuck away, to look out, to make the room feel like it was designed for one person in particular.

There’s something quietly thrilling about watching a colour on a sample board and a sketch on tracing paper become the backdrop to a childhood.

A basement asked to do several things at once - watch films, pour drinks, sit quietly, gather people.

The answer wasn’t more rooms, it was one sofa placed back-to-back: one side drawing you toward the screen, the other anchoring a bar built to earn its corner.

Opposite, a low seating nook pulls the room into balance - somewhere to settle without occasion, stripped of distraction, with just enough enclosure to feel deliberate. The contrast between the two sides is the whole point.

Furniture as architecture. Porro doing what it does best.
