The last light of summer, on a Danish island in the North Sea.

A summer house on Fanø - low in the marram grass, turned to the water, built to hold the small rituals of a season: bare feet, a game of Yatzy, the walk down to the beach before the light goes.

As the evenings draw in, this is the one we keep coming back to.

Staffan and Monique share seven rules they swear by, from why three is the magic number to how to feel the temperature of each room.

1. Answer the question before you choose the answer.
2. Every scheme has a temperature.
3. Let one material carry the room.
4. Edit until only the essential remains.
5. Three beats two or four.
6. Functional sculpture is the most powerful thing you can add.
7. Every room needs one hero.

What a few weeks it’s been.

Design week brought us back to what we love most: good conversations about design, with people who care about it as much as we do.

We joined the House & Garden List talk with Staffan spoke with and about running a family business, .rich joined Tollgard in the showroom for an evening of ideas and conversation with and . And many more incredible events.

Thank you to everyone who came, spoke, listened and inspired us. We’re already looking forward to the next one!

The next in our Take Five series - five hotels Staffan has actually slept in.

A Liberty palace on Lake Como. A 16th-century seminary handed back to Milan. A Thai pavilion that rewrote the rules for the destination resort. A bush camp that knew when to stop building. A beach house that lets a family fall apart gracefully at dawn.

They share almost nothing - except that each knows exactly what it is. The same quality we look for in a room.

The library is where this house explains itself.

At our clients’ five-storey Victorian home in Notting Hill, the architecture, led by 23 Architecture, sets the terms: a panelled oak ceiling, a full wall of shelving, a brass balustrade tracing the void where a glazed oak lantern draws light down through the house.

Our part was to answer it - a single leather daybed, placed to catch the light and the treetops beyond.

Somewhere to settle with a book, and simply be.

It always begins with a moodboard, and this was the softest we’ve made.

Blush bouclé, warm terracotta, natural linen and limed oak, a whisper of sage: a palette gathered to feel like a childhood daydream.

From it grew this whimsical room in our Holland Park Villa. A colony of Cole & Son (Wallpapers) Ltd hand-drawn flamingos wades quietly through the reeds - wrapping a bed that is really a hideaway, a little house within the house, painted in Farrow & Ball Dead Salmon’ and softened with Kvadrat wool.

A terracotta &Tradition ‘Flowerpot’ glows overhead, Louis Poulsen lights keep company at the Restoration Hardware desk, and a rose-blush Casamance blind filters the morning.

Somewhere to sleep, to play, and to imagine the rest.

Joinery is where a house keeps its secrets.

It decides what is shown and what is tucked away - the backlit niche that frames a single object, the wall that opens to a w**e store, the door you would never find unless you knew it was there.

Across our projects it is often where the Red Thread runs most clearly: cabinetry made to the millimetre, and made to last. A drinks cabinet behind panelled doors, a games room lined in oak, a bed built into its own quiet architecture.

Fresh surfaces.

We commissioned a new lacquered kitchen in a warm neutral using an age-less contemporary Shaker-style design.

The hero of the room was in fact the Dekton worktop and splashback. The softly textured waves are reminiscent of travertine, but impervious to the ravages of time, tabasco or turmeric.
