The URBAnest • Fermentery Shop Concept

The materials chosen highlight the craftmanship of people around Tower of Hamlets. Various patterns, textures and colours have been selected to enhance well-being through colour psychology and sensorial design. Natural colours and patterns found in nature have been used repetitively as a strategy for biophilic design and to connect the spaces throughout the building.

The URBAnest • concept

The concept proposes to connect the city to nature through implementing biophilic approaches and a vertical edible garden that is self-supporting for a new start-up business model based on healthy food products made of both fresh and fermented vegetables, that will accomodate a sense of local, engage and support the community and become a catalyst for the community’s resilience post pandemic. As such, the vertical garden concept will create a ‘soft’ edge to the building’s brutalist structure and allows vistitors to move throughout the building, experience nature and various indoor and autdoor activities.

The project proposes a temporary accommodation area within the Gallery 2, the historic central reading room of the former Whitechapel Library, to accommodate a community of artists invited to hold a fundrising event that support the children of Tower of Hamlets living in poverty. As such, the gallery will have the opportunity to become a destination for culture, learning, well-being and creativity.
