Vini Curtis’s Take on the lighting of Wasteman, met with widespread critical acclaim and award nominations.

The success of Wasteman has been great to watch, especially with how low the budget was.

When I came on, Lorenzo and Cal had already put a lot of thought into the style and prison tropes they wanted to avoid. We wanted something real and gritty.

Set across a couple of cells over multiple story days, Lorenzo and I wanted the audience to feel the passage of time, with moods built through time of day, weather and practicals placed around the set.
We shot 3 weeks at London Film Studios in full-size cell replicas, ceilings and four solid walls so camera could move freely, meaning practically lit throughout: either no practicals and just security lights bleeding in, or 1, 2 or all on for a pocket of light in the corner. Each combo gave a different feel.

Lorenzo wanted something mobile to give life in the eyes that could follow the handheld. Rosco DMG Lighting Dashes, Astera Asteras, Aputure MC Pros, nothing felt right in the eye. So I made a couple of small silver foamcore boxes: one with a Dash bounced off the back with diffusion at the front, another slightly larger with 2 Helios tubes. They became known as the Heli and Diddy boxes, over comms.

Outside we needed to move fast between lighting states. Mirrors gave us a hard slash of sun, with Aputure, Lê Nguyễn Hoàng Nam and Fiilex RGBW units covering soft cloud, heavy overcast and all the night looks, sodium lamps and security lights on or off.
Two Lightstar balloons overhead recreated the prison skylights, with a Dyno 1200 through a frame faking a window at the end of the walkway.

For the final dusk scene, which we couldn’t shoot at dusk on location, we talked through the plan during and after the recce, realising the bulkheads on the wing walls would need to compensate too. Above a caged floor beneath the skylight was a hatch to rig net and diffusion on ropes, pulled across to bring the light down, with Lorenzo compensating on colour temp. In prelight we landed on tungsten bulbs with 1/2 CTO and Cyan 30, with extra CTO ready for the scene.

Proud of this one.

.gaffer ‘s take on lighting the World Cup 26 kit launch ft.

“Wild one lighting this in a small space, but we pulled it off!

A lot of high frame rates to comp for so we needed some punch. We had a 20x20 softbox overhead with 20 × V8s and an eggcrate.

Heavy contrast was the goal - so we keyed from one side through 2x 12x12 T-bars, using a mix of Skypanel X23s and a couple of standalone units with hyperoptics for highlights. A 900c w/ 150cm Parabolic acted as our fill/ eye light.

Another 900C provided our 3/4 back edge light, along with 2 × Luxed-9s, which we rolled in and out as needed.

We also had 2 × 2400Bs into hard silver cascades from the front for the rippling light effect.

All lighting effects were done in-camera by moi via “

The Banshee. Built in Italy, designed with some of the best grip and lighting people in the industry, and it shows.

120kg payload and 3.4m max height - so it’ll take whatever you put on it. Chain-driven wind-up column with a dual-handle crank and safety lock, braked wheels, puncture-proof tyres, and a one-movement leg setup so it’s ready in seconds. The nestable design means it doesn’t eat the truck either.

If you’ve got a heavy fixture that needs to go up, this is the stand for it.

.Lane_ ‘s take on the x World Cup lighting.

“When and told me about this project, I knew straight away how rare something like this was. Nike. Palace. England. World Cup commercial. These don’t come often, and when they do, you show up and give everything you’ve got.

It started on the recce. Lots of location moves, and I were in constant discussion ensuring we needed to be nimble, quick to rig and de-rig and utilise the time given across multiple locations.

The shoot itself matched that energy. Built around a nimble package of S60Cs, global 2400Bs, and Asteras. and (Director) wanted the look to feel gritty and naturalistic. Our lighting approach established many different tones: strong flash frontal, natural sun rakes, fluorescent, and shaping and motivating existing light. It was important that scenes felt distinct from each other in tone and style. Oh, and shooting Wayne Rooney dressed as Shakespeare delivering a monologue was definitely a highlight.

The biggest challenge came on the final day, Recreating Stonehenge. To pull it off, my rigger Lee Doran and his team rigged two telehandlers: one carrying a 12x12 softbox comprised of Vortex 8s and S60Cs for our soft overhead moonlight ambient, and the other a 15KW backlight built from x4 Nanlux 2400Bs and x1 Nanlux 5000B. We also had an old school toy to play with, 100KW lightning strikes. All of it shot through the night with rain and fire SFX. The field had turned into a complete bog, but we kept going. Watching it back genuinely felt like we’d created something special.

Working with Jack is something I genuinely value. We’ve built a real trust and the freedom to experiment, whether that means bringing new tools to the table or unearthing legacy kit to see what we can pull out of it together. Having that creative openness pushes me to bring more to every job.

I can’t thank my team enough on this one: “

Above the Influence

Gaffer Eliot Morris shares his take on lighting of the campaign.

“Toby Leary’s (DOP) deck referenced an on-camera flash style of still photography. This paired with a tight budget, and shooting on a long zoom lens 50-75ft away from the subject, from a bridge - we went for 2x 18k Silverbullets straddled together, pushing through a very light diffusion frame to try our best at unifying the source whilst retaining a readable level of light on camera to sell the effect.”

Cover Gaffer Jasper Clarkson shares his take on lighting covered for the campaign.

“Thanks to Toby and El’s plans, taking over on the day of the shoot was made super simple, our only concerns were weather and wind, which is a super important thing to always be prepared for on exterior days, our sparks were all experienced with their knots, and we had enough people to go ahead and start prelighting the evening setup for Saliba on the bus stop. Having low wattage LED’s for our evening setup meant only needing a 2.5kw genny and not needing to bring the 50k Isuzu over”
