I’m finally coming out….. as a non-full time woodworker. For almost as long as I’ve been tinkering with lumber, I’ve also been shucking oysters.

I always shied away from talking about oysters on here. Firstly, because it wasn’t ’on brand’ and, secondly, because of a toxic, self-appointed inferiority complex. My brother Bob Groves is a bit of an oyster celeb and wrote a beautiful book about the little fu***rs.

For over a decade I’ve tortured myself about doing something that was ‘my brother’s ‘thing’’. But I’ve grown up a lot recently.

Oysters have always paid my rent and, very significantly, they have funded Skapa for ages now. Shucking is, after all, still a craft skill and I so love working with my hands.

I learned my trade shucking for Richard Haward's Oysters at Borough Market, have done it at Chiltern Firehouse, for Shop / Streetfood / Oyster Bar on Broadway Market. The shucking game took me to Arctic Norway to work for Roderick Sloan . Those little bivalves have taken me places and given me lots of amazing friends along the way.

I’m now head oyster shucker at The Horses in Clerkenwell for PUBS • PRODUCE • STUDIO . Extremely grateful for the opportunity! I’ve worked hard to be here and seem only now able to be kind enough to myself to admit that maybe I’m semi decent at the job.

Onwards!

Big ol’ Fodder Bowl in English ash. Really can’t decide whether to keep this one for myself - you know when one of them just feels different and a little magical.

I’m probably going to post about this one quite a lot, soz 🌳

Managed to get some plane time in the other day. Revisited an old faithful in Green Park. A few moments of stillness in the thralls of the metropolis. F**k I love the calm they bring. Colours, textures, light; so grounding.

It was sad to see just how many leaves had been shed following this summer’s drought, but these majesties are resilient 🍁

Time well spent.

Sexy, seductive sycamore🌳

As yet unoiled and unbranded. I’m putting together some bits and pieces for a new stock dump on my website soonish down the line.

Really enjoying these raw process shots. Some behind the scenes insights into the private world of the workshop.
