Residential Library & Study

A sophisticated residential library designed as a versatile space for work, reading, meetings and relaxation.

Workplane developed a layered lighting scheme to complement the rich timber joinery, marble fireplace and carefully curated interiors. Integrated illumination to the bookshelves provides a soft architectural glow while discreet accent lighting highlights artwork and objects throughout the room.

A trio of statement pendants creates a strong focal point above the central table, balancing the room’s proportions and providing a comfortable level of light for working and reading. Decorative wall and table lighting adds warmth and intimacy, allowing the atmosphere to be adapted from productive workspace to relaxed evening retreat.

A considered combination of architectural and decorative lighting creates a space that is both functional and inviting, day and night.

A considered approach to residential lighting.

For this refined living space, the lighting is designed to create atmosphere as much as illumination. A sculptural cluster of opal pendants forms the focal point, while carefully positioned architectural lighting adds a softer layer of light across the room, artwork and joinery.

The result is warm, intimate and understated — allowing the architecture, materials and furnishings to take centre stage.

As daylight fades, the role of lighting becomes architectural.

For this private London residence, our intent was to ensure the building transitions elegantly into the evening, retaining presence without dominance.

Rather than relying on brightness, the scheme focuses on:

• Contrast and hierarchy
• Controlled highlighting of key features
• Use of Low CCT luminaires
• A warm, inviting internal ambience visible from the street
• Lighting controls that manage brightness and importantly schedules and controls duration of lighting

Lighting should never compete with architecture—it should quietly elevate it.
