Before he was a war hero… he was a menace with a bucket.

This is Pal.

A Newfoundland puppy with oversized paws, unstoppable curiosity, and absolutely no understanding of personal dignity.

In this scene, frm chapter 1, he has managed to get his head stuck in a metal bucket. Again. He bumps into everything. His tail still wags like he’s won Best in Show. He makes those ridiculous puppy grunts and snorts that sound like a tiny tractor trying to start.

And Molly – his best friend – laughs. Proper, unfiltered, child laughter. The kind that fills a room. She doesn’t say a word. She just laughs because Pal is gloriously, hopelessly himself.

There’s no war yet. No ships, gunfire, or Hong Kong.

Just a dog. A girl. A friendship built on mud, mischief and loyalty.

This is where Gander: The Dog Who Went To War begins.

Because before he carried a gr***de away from soldiers… he carried buckets on his head and chased joy around a kitchen.

If you want to understand why Gander didn’t run when it mattered most, you start here – with Pal.

You can read the free chapter right now and see if it’s your kind of story.

Available as Kindle, Paperback, Hardback from Amazon. Start with the mischief, stay for the courage.

Chapter 6 – Sabotage in the Dark.

By now, Hong Kong is no longer a posting on a map. It’s smoke in the lungs, glass and dirk in his fur.

Night falls and the city changes character. Shadows move, wires are cut. Somewhere in the dark, a saboteur makes his move.

Gander doesn’t understand war, but he understands tension in a man’s voice. He understands fear but knows his job, and he must find his unit.

This is where the story tightens, where puppy innocence burns off and loyalty hardens into something unbreakable.

I am just a dog.

Loyalty made me brave when fear was loud and things fell apart.

That line sits at the heart of "Gander: The Dog Who Went To War".

Not because Gander knew he was brave.
He didn’t, he was a dog. He stayed close, he trusted his people. He followed instinct when the world stopped making sense.

This video captures that moment – before medals, before history, before anyone knew how it would end.

If this speaks to you, don’t take my word for it, read the free Kindle sample.

The opening chapter will tell you everything you need to know about the dog, the story, and whether it’s for you.

Hong Kong. 1941.
Smoke. Searchlights. Broken hills.
And one Newfoundland dog who refused to run.

Gander: The Dog Who Went to War is a true story about loyalty under fire, bravery without orders, and the quiet heroism history nearly forgot.

This isn’t a kids’ dog story. It’s a war story – just told from closer to the ground.

Courage doesn’t always wear a uniform.

Book coming soon.

Golden glow, up close. Shot on Nikon using macro to dive into the delicate folds of this blooming yellow rose.

There’s something about a yellow rose, joyful, soft, and just a little rebellious. Captured with an ancient Nikon, this image zooms in on the texture and gentle chaos within the bloom.

Macro turns everyday beauty into drama

Japanese Anemone is a bold beauty that buzzes with energy. Macro unlocks the fierce elegance hidden in every petal and filament.

Zoom in and you meet the flower’s real personality - punchy, proud, a little bit punk rock. This shot explores depth and contrast with natural light and bold form. Who knew flower power could look this fierce?

Lisianthus, quietly theatrical. Captured in full softness and shadow. This lisianthus feels like a whisper on film, subtle, romantic, with just enough edge.

Macro photography lets us capture nuance: the ruffle of a petal, the shadow of a stamen. Proof that less can be breathtaking.

As Bristol gears up for the third Gromit Unleashed Art Trail this summer, we looked into the archives to find some never-before-seen stills from the original 2013 trail campaign, which Renegade created with writer Cris Warren and Icon Films.

It's surreal and as bonkerdoodles as only the beagle can side eye, and brilliantly Bristol.

In one shot, a five-foot Gromit is seen being pushed up Park Street right in front of the infamous Banksy "Well Hung Lover" mural, a perfectly Bristol moment if ever there was one.

In another? He’s being craned across the Harbourside, flying high above the boats and bobbing waters, with none other than the SS Great Britain in his orbit. Two Bristol icons. One unforgettable lift.

That first trail raised £2.3 million for WWallace & Gromit's Grand Appealand Bristol Children’s Hospital. It made art fun, accessible and unmissably local.

Let’s celebrate where it all began. And get ready to fall in love with Gromit all over again this summer.

“Are you some kind of photographer, mate?”
That’s what Richard Ashcroft asked me as I took these shots back in 2006. The answer? Sort of. I was a newspaper photographer, one day snapping car crashes, restaurant reviews, the next chasing politicians, and every now and then, capturing a Britpop icon in his back garden.

Fast forward to 2025: Ashcroft is back, supporting Oasis on their massive reunion tour. Britpop is alive, swaggering, and louder than ever.

To celebrate, I’ve dropped a limited run of exclusive t-shirts featuring never-before-seen photos from that shoot. No PR spin. No big-budget set-up. Just Richard, a camera, and a moment in time.
