LONG VILLAGE, LONG TOWN, NECK END
One of six towns making up the city of Stoke-on-Trent, Longton began life as an agricultural village in the 13th Century.
A few centuries later, the addition of a main road was the start of a bustling town, seeing a rise of pottery factories appearing in Longton thanks to its geographical advantage (coal, iron ore and clay marl). Known for producing some of the finest bone china, this is where the nickname ‘China Town’ comes from.
Our factory, Duchess Works, has been here since 1888, with a variety of owners and names during this time.
Longton is also home to Gladstone Pottery (est. 1815) where Great Pottery Throw Down is filmed, Walker’s Nonsuch Toffee (est. 1894) and Belstaff Manufacturing Ltd (est. 1924).
