The genderq***r flag originally represented the non-binary genders too. It was designed in 2010 by Marilyn Roxie.

Lavender was chosen as a mix of blue and pink (the traditional colours associated with binary genders), to instead represent androgynous and "q***rness".
White was used, similar to the transgender flag, to represent those who identify with a neutral or agender identity.
Dark green was chosen as the direct opposite to lavender to represent those who identify as a gender outside of the binary.

I have to admit, it's not my favourite flag, but it has its place in LGBTQIA+ history. Many of the flag designs I have utilised so far have been designed within the last decade.

Today I want to show you the non-binary flag. Coincidentally, and I didn't realise when I was scheduling these posts, today is International Non-Binary People's Day!

Non-binary is an identity on its own, or it can be considered an umbrella term for people who identify as a gender that is outside the traditional binary (i.e male and female). Non-binary is often shortened to NB or enby. It's down to personal preference as to which term is used!

This flag was designed in 2014 by then 17 year old Kye Rowan as an alternative flag to be flown alongside the genderq***r flag (that's tomorrow's post!)

Yellow represents gender outside the binary.
White represents those who identify with many or all genders.
Purple represents those who feel both male and female binary genders or fluid in between.
Finally, black represents the agender community.

Please be aware that many non-binary folx use they/them pronouns, and please respect their preferences 😄

Today it's the Transgender flag design!

Simply put, to be transgender means for your gender identity to be different to the gender you were assigned at birth. That doesn't necessarily mean the direct binary opposite, I have met many trans folx who identify as one of the many non-binary genders!

(Yes, I am using these posts to educate people about the many different genders and orientations!)

So why these colours?

Baby blue is the colour traditionally worn by baby boys, and baby pink is the colour traditionally worn by baby girls. Because society says so. Although I think it has to be said that my mum never dressed me in pink because she didn't like it 😂

The white stripe represents those who are in the process of transitioning, or those who identify with a non-binary, neutral or undefined gender.

Currently in the UK being transgender is really difficult. It's still legal to force a trans person to have conversion therapy, something the LGBTQIA+ community is desperately trying to outlaw. We are ahead of some countries in the world where it's illegal to be transgender or in a same gender relationship, but we still have a long way to go. We should be celebrating our individuality, not attacking it.

If you are looking to donate to a transgender friendly charity, Stonewall UK or Mermaids are great charities that work with transgender folx.

Next up is the old fashioned Rainbow flag!

What do the colours of this flag represent? I hear you ask. Well, I'll tell you.

Black and brown represent PoC (People of Colour) within the LGBTQIA+ community.
Red represents life
Orange represents healing
Yellow represents new ideas
Green represents prosperity
Blue represents serenity
Purple represents spirit!

I was toying with a heart design for the progress flag which includes the trans flag colours and the inters*x flag colours (censored for FB purposes, sorry gang), but there honestly just weren't enough squares 😂

To kick off my one post a day to show my designs (and tempt you lovely lot into pledging to my Kickstarter campaign so I can sell cute art with these designs 👀 ) , I decided to begin with one I literally just created, but is relevant to the month of July.

July is disability pride month!

The flag to represent the disabled community has recently been redesigned by Ann Magill, a disabled woman, so I decided to make my own version of it too! The creator has waived all copyright claims to allow people like me to create their own versions, although I felt I must credit her for her fantastic design.

Black represents mourning, rage, and those who are victims of ableist violence, as well as rebellion and protest.

The five colours represent the different needs and experiences of the disabled community.

The stripes are parallel to show solidarity with each other as well as to celebrate our differences.

The diagonal pattern represents "cutting across barriers that separate disabled people".

The desaturated colour choices are so that colourblind people can still distinguish the differences in colours on this flag. Also in Magill's redesign the lightning shapes have been taken out as they were causing a strobing effect when scrolled past which led to some people experiencing migraines and/or seizures.

Disabled people are an important part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Our voices must be heard, which is why I felt it was important to show this design first.
