Here's something very special: an elegant mahogany cased triple fusee longcase clock signed Dunthorne, Liverpool.
It is possible this formed part of the stock of the old firm ‘Boodles & Dunthorne’ that was purchased by Harold and Herbert Wainwright in 1910. This included the premises and illustrious stock of jewellery, antiques, silver, gold pocket watches and special timepieces. Whether this clock was sold prior to their acquisition is unclear however stylistically it sits well within this timeframe in the revived neo-classical taste. The firm exists to this day trading now as ‘Boodles’.
The recently serviced triple fusee movement with Westminster chime strikes on four gongs at each quarter and on a fifth gong on the hour – all of which can be silenced if desired. The brass cased pendulum is suspended on a thickly turned timber rod.
The bombe-shaped case constructed of choice mahogany features an elongated door with harebells and acanthus flanked by c-scrolls framing various richly carved fruits and foliage. Raised on a finely gadrooned plinth standing on scrolled radiating feet adorned with delicately carved floral roundels.
The drum-shaped hood, sitting atop more gadrooning, exhibits deeply carved acanthus flanked by s-scrolls rising from which are olive branches either side of the brass bezel and convex glass door. This distinctive Grecian ornament – showing some minor historic losses – symbolises wisdom, peace and prosperity. The top terminates in further scrolls aligning in alternating trefoils in a crown-like manner.
