It’s only a little kitchen… 🤔 True reality....

Every time I get an enquiry for a kitchen, I quite often hear:

“It’s only a little kitchen, it shouldn’t take you more than a day or so.”

And yes… it might be a little kitchen. 😂

But what people don’t always see is the amount of time and preparation that goes into getting it ready before I even start painting.

This photos are from this morning’s job, and it has taken me around 2 hours just to sheet everything up and prepare the kitchen for sanding.

That includes:
✔️ Sheeting all the units and worktops
✔️ Protecting the floors
✔️ Masking and taping everything properly
✔️ Removing and protecting sockets
✔️ Protecting appliances
✔️ Masking around all the different areas and angles
✔️ Making sure everything is properly sealed and protected before sanding begins.

And then there’s the prep, sanding, filling, priming, painting and finishing to actually do.

A kitchen may have less wall space than a standard room, but it can actually be far more time-consuming because you've got cupboards, worktops, appliances, sockets, corners, awkward angles and loads more cutting in.

In fact, there can be more time spent preparing and cutting in a small kitchen than there is painting an average-sized room.

This is also why, when I'm working on a kitchen, the kitchen is generally unusable until the job is completed.

Just imagine if I had to spend anything from 1–2 hours every morning sheeting everything up, then another 1–2 hours at the end of every day un-sheeting and cleaning everything down, only to do it all again the following morning.

That's not productive time — that's time that would ultimately be added to the cost of the job.
Time costs money.

So when you're getting quotes for decorating work, don't just look at the size of the room and think “it's only small.”
There's a lot more involved than simply putting paint on the walls.

The preparation is a huge part of the job — and it's what makes the finished result look good. 👌🏼

✨ A few feature walls from this recent 4-bed property! ✨

I had a bit of a wallpaper nightmare on this job 😅 — unfortunately, two lots had to be changed due to the quality being so poor. Then I had the stress of waiting in for deliveries and time frame of the delivery as some came from another country.

The pink bedroom wallpaper was £60 a roll and paste-the-wall, so you’d expect it to be fantastic. However, after checking the reviews before installation, I found lots of complaints about the colour wiping off — and unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened around the seams. 😩 Absolutely Not good good enough and I added my own review to this.

Despite this, I managed to get a good finish, but it’s frustrating knowing there are tiny imperfections that are completely outside of my control. To stand back and look it's seamless but to myself as a perfectionist it's just not good enough!

👉 My biggest piece of advice to clients: PLEASE check the reviews before purchasing wallpaper! Even expensive, paste-the-wall wallpaper isn’t necessarily good quality. I’m always happy for you to consult me beforehand too, as I can often advise on what will be easier to work with.

The palm wallpaper from the same company, on the other hand, was absolutely brilliant! 🌴

Thankfully, the finished walls look gorgeous — but this job definitely taught us that good wallpaper makes a BIG difference! 💕🎨
