Here’s a recent home cinema we’ve built, with six seats ready for film nights with family and friends.
The setup includes:

• Klipsch speakers for the cinema sound.
• A Marantz amplifier to power the speakers.
• An Epson laser projector to bring your favourite films to the big screen.

We love seeing a room come together, ready for everyone to settle into their seats and choose the first film. Agreeing on what to watch might be the hardest part!

🎵💡 It turns out our work doesn’t always stop at the cinema room…

Recently, we’ve been working on a few installations in spas and wellness centres, designing and installing multi-room audio and lighting control systems.

What’s particularly nice is how these projects have come about.

They’re for existing Cinema@Home customers who we originally worked with on their home cinemas. When they needed audio, lighting and control systems for their businesses, they asked us if we could help there too.

It’s always good when a customer comes back to us for another cinema project, but being trusted to work on completely different projects for them is particularly rewarding.

The technology might be going into a spa rather than a cinema room, but the principles are much the same:

Something rather substantial has just arrived over at our sister company, H3 Digital, in Phuket, Thailand. 🇹🇭🔊

We’ve just taken delivery of the new OSD XMax11 home cinema amplifier, ready to be installed in the H3 Digital cinema showroom.

And when I say substantial, I mean it. This thing weighs 34kg!

It will soon be powering the showroom cinema system, where we’re expecting plenty of power, control and refinement. Exactly what you want from the amplification at the heart of a serious cinema room.

I’ve always enjoyed the equipment side of building cinemas, and there’s something particularly satisfying about a big, beautifully engineered amplifier like this.

Looking forward to getting it into the rack and hearing what it can do. 🎬🍿

A little acoustic upgrade in my office/cinema demo room today. 🔊

I’ve been fitting some acoustic diffusers to the back wall behind my desk.

Diffusers work differently from acoustic absorption. Rather than simply absorbing sound energy, they scatter reflections in different directions. This helps make the room sound more natural and spacious, without making it feel too acoustically dead.

It’s something I use when designing cinema rooms too. Getting the acoustics right isn’t just about covering walls with absorption. A good room normally needs a considered combination of absorption, diffusion and reflection.

And, of course, they make my office wall look a bit more interesting too!

🔌 Designing the cinema rack before we even get to site…

I’m working on a rack system for an upcoming home cinema where the aim is to build, wire, configure and test as much as possible in the workshop.

Rather than taking a pile of equipment to site and building the rack there, I want the complete rack to arrive fully assembled and ready to plug in.

The connections to the cinema will be:

🔊 11 x Neutrik Speakon connections for the speakers
🔉 2 x XLR connections for the subwoofers
🎬 HDMI connections via a splitter/interface panel
🌐 Network connections
⚡ Power

Everything inside the rack can then be wired properly, labelled, configured and tested before it leaves the workshop.

Once it arrives at the cinema, we roll it into position, connect the room wiring and we're pretty much ready for programming, calibration and final testing.

It takes considerably more planning at the design stage, but it should make the installation cleaner, quicker and much easier to service in the future.

And I do rather enjoy designing racks. 😂

🔊 A little bit of experimenting with the 3D printer…

I’ve started prototyping some small acoustic sound diffusers to see what we can create.

At the moment it’s just for fun. Different shapes, different depths, different patterns, followed by some testing to find out what actually works - Will be using the PRD Calculator here https://actools.tunetown.de/prd/ for the actual 2D primitive root diffusers commonly known as Skyline acoustic diffuser - an example of a two-dimensional diffuser. It incorporates both vertical and horizontal diffusion.

3D printing gives us the freedom to experiment with shapes that would be difficult or time-consuming to manufacture traditionally. Design it, print it, test it, change it and print another one. 😎

Whether these ever make it into one of our cinema projects remains to be seen, but I’m enjoying finding out! 🎬🔊

♻️ Who needs expensive site furniture when you have empty cable reels? 😂

One of the less glamorous parts of installing a home cinema is spending hours working close to the floor. Kneeling, crouching and sitting on the floor soon takes its toll!

So, we decided to turn some empty Webro Cable & Connectors reels into our own little home cinema installation seats.

A bit of padding, some of our home cinema fabric and voilà! Comfy little seats that are perfect for working down at floor level. 😎

A simple bit of recycling that actually works really well. And much kinder on the knees!

A tidy desk… well, sort of! 😂

Working in home cinema design and installation means my workspace tends to collect things.

Cables, connectors, samples, design books, drawings, acoustic materials and all the little bits and pieces that go into building a great cinema room.

So today I decided it was time for a proper tidy-up and rearrange.

I’ve cleared some space, organised the equipment and made room for the home cinema design and building materials that were taking over my desk.

It’s amazing how much easier it is to think when your workspace is organised.

Now I just need to keep it that way! 😁

Back on the Sonos training! 🔊

Yesterday I spent some time training with my son Jamie on the new Sonos Amp Multi at Pulse Cinemas

✅ Sonos is a product I know particularly well. During my time in Thailand, I was the Sonos distributor for many years and was personally involved with installations in probably 1,000+ rooms, so it was great to get back into the technical side and see what the latest generation of products can do.

✅ Things have moved on a lot, and the new Amp Multi brings some interesting possibilities for distributed audio and whole-home systems - It's a Pro install only product and is very exciting.

✅ More and more I'm being asked to complete multi-room audio and networking for my home cinema clients, this new Pro equipment from Sonos will be great!

Even better, I got to do the training alongside Jamie. Passing on the knowledge and experience I've built up over more than 20 years in AV and smart home installations is something I really enjoy.

There's always something new to learn in this industry, and there's no better way to stay sharp than getting hands-on with the latest technology.

Sonos + experience + the next generation. A good combination! 🎵

A little bit of Rackwork today 🎬

Working on the Sanus AV rack today for one of our latest home cinema projects. I wanted to get a really good idea of what the finished rack is going to look like and so I got some front panels of the Anthem & MadVR equipment printed up and fitted the prints to some Eziblock panels.

I then gave them a light coat of gloss to protect the prints and, more importantly, give them that shiny finish you get from real amplifier fascias. Once they were dry, I fitted them into the Sanus rack.

This was all in aid to visualise the finished installation. I can now see exactly how the equipment is going to sit in the rack before the real kit goes in.

Of course, I made a few mistakes along the way! 😂

✅ I printed the amplifiers slightly too big
✅ Also managed to leave a few fingerprints on some of the prints before I glossed them. You can see them if you look closely.

A bit of trial and error today, but I’m really pleased with how it’s starting to come together. Plus these are reusable.
