Little annoyances throughout your day can build up to add micro stresses that you could do without

Don’t position your shower controls directly underneath the shower head! Instead made sure they are easily accessible from both outside and inside the shower

Position them at a height that is comfortable for the user and so they won’t be in the way whilst showering (no one likes a banged elbow)

And niches in showers for toiletries are a must, why go to the trouble of using fancy tiles if you’re going to clutter it up with a horrid stainless steel bottle holder…

A lot of designers have seen a drop in enquiries since the invention of AI, which is perfectly valid when you see what amazing ideas and visuals AI can create.

BUT, the creative look is 5% of the actual job. For anyone who has ever run a project, you know the work that goes into the behind the scenes stuff that clients very rarely see.

AI is a wonderful tool, but that’s exactly it. It’s a tool. It cannot execute a project and fulfil the install like an interior designer can.

So fret not. If clients are using mid journey, Claude, ChatGPT or any of the other multitude of programmes out there, then let them.

They’ll call you when the pretty tiles they ordered are a sloppy death trap when wet, or the copper shower turns green, or the LED lights in the kitchen flicker because they chose the wrong driver.

They’ll call you when the electrician is arguing with the plumber whose responsibility the positioning of the towel rail spur was.

They’ll call you when the marble worktop they chose for the gin bar is stained with lemon juice after the first use.

They’ll call you when the windows open in the wrong direction.

They’ll call you when they want trade discounts from companies you’ve spent years building relationships with.

They’ll call you. And if they don’t, they’re not worth your time, your knowledge or your experience.

Well what a week it’s been! I celebrated my 40th year at the weekend with some of my nearest and dearest and it was FABULOUS 🍸

A surprise trip to London on Saturday for dinner, cocktails (lots of cocktails…) and dancing til 3am

Sunday brought more surprises with family arriving for a lovely afternoon of champagne, cake and singing 😂

I am incredibly lucky to have so many amazing people in my life and this has definitely been the best birthday I’ve ever had. I guess life does really begin at 40!

Thank you to all of my loves who made an old girl feel special and brought buckets of laughter and joy to my birthday

So here’s to the next decade, I have a feeling it’s going to be the best one yet… 😉❤️🥂

A fresh look for a fresh start. Over the last few weeks I have reviewed our services and what we offer to clients

What we do best:

- in person site meetings with contractors to preemptively snag their work and see issues before they arise, saving clients money and time, saving the contractors headaches

- visits with clients to joinery manufacturers to alter design details and enhance their kitchens, dressing rooms and other built in joinery

- in person or zoom calls with homeowners to discuss the practical design details of their proposed projects so we can make adjustments on paper before work commences

- in person or zoom calls with developers to advise them on value engineering their build projects to maximise saleability and ROI

- design consultations with clients to advise them on the details they will have missed on their own that would enhance their spaces, oversights by their architects and where to source from

- links with reputable suppliers to recommend them directly to clients and ensure they have a steady flow of work and clients receive the best services and products on the market

- sharing knowledge of spacial planning, project management, build timelines, lighting design, joinery detailing, furniture sourcing, ergonomic and health enhancing design

Most people wait til the end of a project to find the problems. I do it at the start. What’s not working, what’s going to cost you later, what needs to change now. Someone who spots problems before they’re built in.

If you’re about to embark upon a project or are in the midst of one and wondering if you’re on the right track, schedule a free consultation in the link in the bio to discuss our design audit service packages

When I started out in the industry over a decade ago i was SO excited by every trade show

Then after realising the amount of unnecessary waste they create, I stepped back for a while and actually hated the thought of going. Plus it meant a day away from the desk and a day to catch up, which when you’re busy is a nightmare

BUT what I’ve come to realise is that it’s part and parcel of our job to advise clients on what products are wise to spend money on and what to avoid, and by visiting trade shows we have the opportunity to grill the suppliers about their manufacturing processes, guarantees, how they source their materials and what their ‘after purchase’ model is (because this is often the most important part)

You might be surprised to know we’re not just there for the free champagne, but hey if it’s on offer then it would be silly not to enjoy🥂

Hotel bedroom aesthetics DON’T work for daily living. Your home should be comfortable and welcoming, not clinical and void of personality

Hotel rooms are designed to appeal to the masses, photograph well, and be used for short term stays

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary and it needs to be practical for busy mornings and relaxing evenings

Don’t get carried away with the Pinterest Boards, think about what you actually need in the space first, then consider aesthetics later

My all time favourite reel on the t’internet right now is from that I’ve reposted on my grid 🤭

If you’re looking for an interior designer, please for the LOVE OF GOD choose one that’s qualified and accredited

Unless you like burning money like paper and want your home to look like a Chelsea Harbour showroom with no practical function at all

Wishing all of my friends, family, colleagues, clients, suppliers and supporters a very happy holiday season

It’s been a busy year for Studio JQ and it looks very different than this time last year. The road to running a business is never linear, especially when you’re reliant upon so many extraneous things that are beyond your control

- contractors
- suppliers
- the postal service
- clients
- team members
- the internet
- technology
- family
- social media
- governing bodies
- your network
- yourself

The only thing you do actually have control of, is how you react when challenges arise.

Take stock of the year behind you, and for a brief moment take stock of the people that intentionally let you down, or didn’t contribute in a positive way. Remember the times you made errors or could have done better, and consider how to handle those situations better next year. Then leave all that behind in 2025.

Move into 2026 with only the positive people, (including yourself). The doers, the change makers, the inspiring ones, the fun ones, the helpful ones, the let’s get s**t done ones.

Set yourself some big audacious goals and work on them every day.

So here is to 2026, 365 days of purpose and intention. It won’t be linear, but it will be what you make it.

Because of busy project schedules this autumn I sadly won’t be able to mentor the cohort I signed up for in October with the Diana Award, but I’ll be back in the Spring.

There are a few key ideas that I always try and communicate to the students I mentor;

⭐ believe in yourself, self confidence will carry you further than anyone else’s belief in you

⭐ have courage, life will not always be an easy road but you have to keep putting one foot in front of the other

⭐ life will throw you curveballs that you don’t see coming. Step up to the pad and hit them out of the park

⭐ kindness will always win over cruelty, eventually

⭐ character and reputation are not the same thing. It is your character that defines who you are, reputation is just what others think of you, and that is often irrelevant

⭐ you can’t argue with idiots.

⭐ stand up for what you believe in, speak up for others who don’t know how to use their voice

⭐ the people who care about you will make themselves heard during both good times and bad. Silence is often deafening and speaks volumes

⭐ not all advice is good advice. Listen to yourself more than you listen to others

⭐ people will disappoint you. That is a reflection of their character, not yours

⭐ let go of what you can’t control. What is meant for you will find you

⭐ you are capable of far more than you think you are. Keep going

⭐ throw ideas out into the world without hesitation. 90% will probably be terrible ideas, but the other 10% is often gold
