Last Friday was mouse week at the Chips Wellness Whittling Club. Who doesn't like a little wooden mouse?

One of our club members came up with the suggestion so I split some of the cherry wood that was left over from the previous week, and prepped it in time for the club meet up.

We were joined by a couple of whittlers who hadn't been for a few months, so that was great to see them again.

Next week the club will once again meet at the Millennium Country Park, in Marston Vale on Fridays and at Wardown Park, Luton on Tuesday mornings.

Last Saturday was a shrinkpot making day. Those days are some of my favourite days and I made shrinkpots with these the fine fellows.

Steve is an old friend and he's made many shrinkpots before. I had just picked up some lovely apple wood and so he made a big shrinkpot from that wood. There was a lovely bright pink colouration in that wood.

For the other two participants this was there first shrinkpot and they did really well. Making shrinkpots is fun but does require some physical effort. You need to turn the t-bar augers to make holes in the branch and then use a mallet and gouge to hollow out the branch wood.

These pots will be song over the next weeks and then we'll be ready to decorate and put to use.

From the 1st September the Chips Wellness Whittling Club will be back on at Wardown Park in Luton.

Once again I'm doing this with the support of the The Wildlife Trust for Beds, Cambs & Northants and Luton Borough Council.

I will set up every Tuesday until the 20th October. İf you would like to come along and learn to whittle wood then this is your chance.

I had a great two days at the Bedford River Festival. I was so grateful to have my wife, Lucy, join me for both days. She manned the stall and talked about the craft process and had lots of conversations.

Chips joined us for the first day but got covered in burrs so was barred from attending on the Sunday!

At the end of each day I used my new rake to clear up all the shavings. The previous week I had made the rake with a student, it worked perfectly.

Last photo are the bowls turned and the one solitary spoon I made. Whenever I go the axe out to carve a spoon, folk wanted me to get back on the pole lathe!!!

I was invited to attend the Bedford River Festival to demonstrate the pole lathe.

It was great fun and there was a lot of interest in watching me turn some bowls and also lots of folk wanted to have a go too.

Even the little nippers wanted to have a go. Some of them were only big enough to pump the treadle!! That was great team work as I just stood there and did the turning.

If you would like to learn to turn a bowl the traditional way then I have two day workshops coming up. The 22nd August and the 24th October.

On that day I will show you how to turn a log into a breakfast bowl. You will need to be over 5 foot high though!!

Had another great day at on Saturday.

Spoon Club kicks off with Vlad making a beautiful cup of coffee and ends with some great nosh and in between there's s lot of carving and chatting going on.

This month a few of us worked on some axe handles, but everyone else were true to tradition and carved spoons and one rebel carved a cake slice.

If you are interested in learning to carve spoons and live in the Bedfordshire area then contact me for details of my next beginners Spoon carving class. If you live further afield I can put you in contact with Spoon carving workshops nearer you.

My next full day workshops(10am till 4pm) are 8th August and 12th September.

It has been so hot recently but sitting under a copse of trees provides some cooler shade.

This is where's we met last Tuesday to whittle some butter knives, a wand, a carrot and a small Swedish horse.

Learning to whittle wood, in a beautiful calm natural setting is a really relaxing and energising activity. If you would like to give it a try then DM for details.

Last week I hosted a group of archaeologists from the Open University. Many of them were interested in wooden objects and carvings that have been 'miraculously' preserved for 1000s of years.

The day together was filled with a couple of fascinating academic presentations, as well as some hands on whittling and two great presentations on pole lathe turning with Ali Ali Asadi and basket making with Ellie

It was such a great day together. Thankful that Ali and Ellie could join me and also to Jessica for having the inspired idea to collaborate in this way.

Our resident dog for the day was Colin. He kept us on our toes, and we're grateful that he didn't run off with anyone's newly whittled spoon or butter knife!

It's always great when the first Saturday of the month comes around - because it's time for spoon club.

Taking time to chat with some kindred spirits and get those tools out again. Nothing like it.

Just back from a great time whittling in Wardown Park, Luton. I do loved whittling in my home town, especially with an enthusiastic bunch of carvers. Some of the group today were first timers and one chap, John, has attended several sessions and is getting into the whittling groove.

İf you would like to join our group you would be very welcome. We meet every Tuesday morning at 10 am. We are finished by 12:30.

It was very changeable weather today. Beautiful sun one moment and then rain, even hail the next. But the gazebo held up and we were able to carry on whittling.

Whittling is such great craft. İt's fun to complete a project in just few hours. İt's great to zone in to shaping wood with small carving knife. İt is engrossing activity.
