And the winner is…⭐️🥁
Strawflowers have definitely been one of this year’s stars of the flower farm. I think they might have earned themselves a permanent place in next year’s growing plans!
And it’s easy to see why. They’re incredibly productive (we’ve had three cuts from ours this year), come in the most beautiful range of colours, last brilliantly in the vase and are just as lovely dried. They add gorgeous texture to arrangements and keep on giving throughout the season. What’s not to love?
Fancy growing your own?
They’re relatively easy to grow and a brilliant addition to any cutting garden. Sow indoors from March to April, or direct outside in May once the risk of frost has passed. Surface sow onto moist compost as the seeds need light to germinate.
A few growing tips
They love a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Plant out after the last frost, water while they’re establishing and pinch out the growing tips to encourage more branching.
And my biggest tip is to keep cutting! Regular harvesting encourages more flowers, so don’t be afraid to pick them. If you’re growing for drying, hang them upside down somewhere cool, dark and dry.
Three cuts from ours this year have shown just how generous these beauties can be.
Save this post for next year’s seed-sowing season and share it with a flower-loving friend!
