Turned for the AWGB Symposium so had to give it a name! Beneath the Burr

At first glance, the burr gives little indication of what lies within. I wanted this piece to retain that contrast, leaving the wild, knotted exterior largely untouched while turning into the opposite face to reveal the intensely figured timber beneath.

The finished bowl is deliberately simple in form, allowing the natural edge, texture and extraordinary grain of the burr to remain the focus. Rough and unpredictable on one side, smooth and highly polished on the other, Beneath the Burr is about revealing rather than reshaping the character already present in the wood.

Finger update:

Saw the consultant at hospital this morning. The range of movement is still really poor, so the next step is a procedure to try and force the joint to move while my arm is under a nerve block.

If that doesn’t work, the next option is surgery to separate the scar tissue and hopefully free it up.

And if that still doesn’t do the job, we’re looking at a joint replacement.

Not quite the update I was hoping for, but there’s a plan in place and I’m staying positive.

GRAPHIC IMAGE WARNING

Today was a bit of a wake-up call for me.

I managed to have my first injury in 26 years of doing something I do every single day. It just goes to show that even with experience, it only takes a split second of not paying full attention for things to go wrong. Funny how something so routine can still catch you out.

After nearly an hour in surgery, the shattered finger is now back together. Thankfully there’s no tendon or nerve damage, which feels like a huge bit of luck all things considered.

I’m incredibly grateful for the care I received from the NHS. The teams at Dewsbury and Pinderfields were brilliant from start to finish. Calm, kind, and reassuring when I needed it most. We’re very lucky to have them.

A humbling reminder that no matter how long you’ve been doing something, things can still happen.

Feeling very thankful tonight and a little sore and bruised.

Today’s focus: commission prep! Getting squares to size and chucking points added. Drill and shape tomorrow!
