BABski WEEKEND - Something a little different this week at • nook•..
As part of Polish Heritage Days, we’re taking over the gallery with BABski WEEKEND - a celebration of Polish artists, makers, designers, photographers and cultural organisers helping shape Birmingham’s creative landscape.
The idea started with a simple thought. As a Polish-born Brummie (well, almost - 20 years and counting!), our founder Gosia wanted to bring a Polish film to •cosy cinema•. One conversation led to another, and before long we realised there were so many brilliant Polish creatives contributing to Birmingham’s cultural life that they deserved a showcase of their own!
Expect a creative showcase, a Friday Social, a screening of the award-winning film My Nikifor in •cosy cinema•, and plenty of conversations, connections and discoveries along the way.
The name? Think Brummie meets Polski. A little nod to being a BAB with a distinctly Polish -ski attached. But there’s a second meaning too - check out the longer story behind the name on our website.
No clichés. No flags. Just brilliant people doing interesting things.

Something a little different this week at •nook•..

As part of Polish Heritage Days, we’re taking over the gallery with BABski WEEKEND - a celebration of Polish artists, makers, designers, photographers and cultural organisers helping shape Birmingham’s creative landscape.

Don’t miss your chance to be part of our biggest - and most global - exhibition yet!

We’ve already had loads of beautiful wall-based submissions, but would LOVE to see more:

Just having a moment 😍🫠…
Whilst my studio / •nook’s• HQ / event space is being taken over by girls and their sewing machines, I’m sitting here quietly appreciating the space - and all the 100+ artists, makers, designers & publishers we get to work with. Still slightly surreal sometimes.
Don’t let me get too emotional though… better get busy again ;)

Our excitement is peaking!

This Monday & Tuesday, a very special event at •nook’s• Cosy Cinema - a screening of The Black Chancellor (1912), as part of .

Do what the people of Kings Heath did in 1914, when this very film was screened here at the original Cosy Cinema. A true little time capsule:
same film, same building — 112 years apart.

With an introduction by Ben Waddington / and an improvised live score by .art .

We love uncovering and celebrating the history of our building - once home to the very first cinema in Kings Heath. Its life as a cinema only lasted around five years, which somehow makes these moments feel even more special.

A couple of weeks ago we even met someone who remembered where the projectionist’s window used to be - still visible into the 1990s. Little fragments of memory like that make the whole story feel wonderfully close.

A rare chance to experience a piece of local history exactly where it happened over a century ago.
