Beyond Canvas Framing Beyond Canvas is an independent framing studio in Nantwich, run by local artist Paul Dunkerley.

With an artist’s eye and years of experience, Paul helps people frame pictures, objects, and the memories that matter most. Our Services Include:

A LITTLE MORE TIME FOR CHRISTMAS FRAMING 🎄

I know it isn’t always easy to reach the shop before 4pm—especially when you’re carrying artwork, football shirts or a carefully concealed Christmas present!

So, from 21 October until 1 December, I’m adding a limited number of later framing appointments.

Normal opening hours remain:

🖼️ Wednesday–Friday: 10am–4pm
🖼️ Saturday: 10am–3pm

Additional bookable appointments:

🕓 Wednesday–Saturday: 4pm–6pm

These later slots are by appointment only and can be booked online. That means I can make sure I’m here, the design table is clear and there’s enough time to discuss your framing properly. And if nobody books, I still get to go home at the usual time!

CHRISTMAS DEADLINES. YES, ALREADY.

I know. It only feels like a few weeks since we were basking in the sunshine—and now I’m talking about Christmas. ☀️🎄

But one or two customers have already started saying, “As long as it’s ready for Christmas…”—which has prompted me to glance rather nervously at the calendar.

A favourite football shirt, family photograph, original art or treasured keepsake can make a wonderfully personal gift. But bespoke framing takes time: each piece needs to be designed thoughtfully, made with the right materials and finished carefully. Shirts, object displays and more unusual projects need especially generous breathing room.

So, reluctantly putting away my sunglasses and reaching for my Christmas-planning hat, these are the important dates:

⚽ 7 November — football shirts, object displays and specialist projects
🖼️ 21 November — standard bespoke framing

Capacity is limited, so earlier is always better. I’ll confirm Christmas completion with you when we agree the design and place your order.

Finished work must be collected by Saturday 19 December.

NO MOUNT. NO DISTRACTION.

Girl with Blue Eyeshadow is a signed, limited-edition Giclée print by UK contemporary artist Margo in Margate—full of the vibrant colour, minimalism and expressive character associated with her work.

The right decision here was to let the image run cleanly towards the frame, without introducing a mountboard that might compete for attention.

A deeper frame and discreet spacers keep the print safely separated from the glazing, while UV-filtering, anti-reflective glass helps reduce reflections and lets those bold colours shine through.

From a framer’s perspective, sometimes the most important design decision is knowing what not to add.

FOUR ORIGINALS. ONE CLEAN FRAMING DECISION.

A regular customer, art buyer and consultant recently brought these four bold and colourful original oil paintings into the workshop for exhibition-ready framing.

We chose a simple 19mm Revival L Style in white from LION Picture Framing Supplies. The crisp finish creates a clean boundary around each painting without competing with its colour or character.

The depth required a little extra thought. Using extended canvas offsets at the back, I brought each artwork closer to the front of its frame. This prevents the paintings from sitting too deeply inside and reduces heavy shadows falling across their surfaces.

L frames—also known as tray or float frames—are particularly well suited to original canvases. They:

• Show the complete artwork from edge to edge
• Create a narrow floating gap around the canvas
• Require no mountboard, backing or glass
• Give paintings a smart, gallery-ready finish

With fewer framing components required, they can often be a more economical option too.

I use this style for the vast majority of my own artwork, and bespoke tray framing has become something of a speciality at Beyond Canvas.

CREWE HAS A NEW PLATFORM FOR ART

I’m delighted to share that two pieces of my own work have been selected for PLATFORM:ONE—the inaugural group exhibition at PLATFORM:Gallery in Crewe.

Running from 19 September to 19 December, the exhibition brings together work by 65 talented artists from across Cheshire East—and entry is completely free.

PLATFORM:Gallery is Crewe’s first dedicated contemporary art space, run by the not-for-profit CreweCreates CIC and led by Jamie Chalmers of Mr X Stitch and Novae Baghurst alongside the CreweCreates team.

What began as a small temporary space in the Market Centre has grown into an ambitious, multi-floor gallery in the former Burton’s building. It’s a brilliant example of town-centre regeneration in action: an empty high-street unit brought back to life as a place where artists, makers and the wider community can come together.

As an artist—and as the owner of Beyond Canvas—I’m especially pleased to have two pieces included in the gallery’s first group show.
