Forgive the sitting on the floor it was the only way I could get this rather large painting and myself in the picture! A look today at this really rather good Victorian period copy of one of the most famous British paintings of the nineteenth century; Landseer’s Dignity and Impudence. Unlike the original this work is for sale and available now!

FOR SALE. This really is a fantastic example! A superb nineteenth century Italian watercolour copy of Correggio’s ‘The mystic marriage of Saint Catherine’. It would have been purchased in Rome, where it was made. It is heightened with gum arabic to give the work the depth of the original oil painting. It is framed in the original English frame which is also of wonderful quality. It is the quintessential English country house piece. Available now! DM for details.

A little look today at an interesting landscape painting by the French artist Alphonse Robert 1807-1885. For me it exemplifies the Romantic landscape tradition. It is painted in oils on canvas in extraordinary detail with wonderful characterful figures and one of the best blasted oak trees I’ve seen in art. The original frame only adds to the appeal. Also available to view at the website or DM me to chat.

I trained as an archaeologist originally and specialised in the archaeology of the Mediterranean. This item has always been at the heart of my interest. It is so enigmatic and crosses the divide between history and mythology. It is the Bull’s Head Ryton discovered at Knossos and represents the height that Minoan art attained. Made of carved black steatite it is the Minotaur brought to life and dates to 1500BCE. Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Crete.

FOR SALE. This is a great still life oil painting full of colour. It comes out of the tradition of the Dutch Golden Age but I think it is French from the eighteenth century. It has a sumptuous arrangement of flowers and most unusually the vase is faience and decorated with a beautiful landscape in blue. A great decorative painting available now! DM me to chat.

The greatest treasures of Crete are held at the archaeological museum in Heraklion. It is an extraordinary place chronicling thousands of years of history. It houses pieces that are icons of European prehistory and is a joy to look around.

NEW STOCK ONLINE! A carefully curated little selection for you all today. We have a huge bronze figure of The Venus de Milo by Ferdinand Barbedienne, the famous Parisian foundry. What a decorative thing it is! In great condition and wonderful quality. There’s also a Georgian bureau on stand which is very unusual in that it is in Yew wood. It also has a lovely interior. A view of low tide near Watchet by Clifford Hanney is the first oil painting and the second is a rather brilliant French impressionist oil of a boat on the sea at night. All available to view at the website or dm me and let’s chat!
