Remember when I used to craft? It feels so long ago. I have finally made it to Little Shophouse, Singapore, where today I had a 5 hour peranakan beading session with expert Mr Robert Sng. Peranakan culture, I think it's fair to say, has died out in Malaysia and Singapore, and there are few people who can pass on the beautiful beading, embroidery and handiwork skills. Mr Sng is one of a handful and I'm so happy to learn from him.
Peranakan refers to the culture that was borne out of mixing Chinese and Malay communities as China and Malaysia traded and their people's moved around throughout SE Asia. Certain designs and colours were used in all sorts of distinct craft work; clothes, handbags, shoes, purses, headbands and sort furnishings, as well as food and desserts.
I'm making a pair of shoes! I met with Mr Sng a few weeks ago to pick the pattern and colour scheme. He prepared the frame, beads, needles and designs. On the paper attached to the frame is the background pattern. On a separate sheet of squared paper is the peony motif that'll be the main focus. Today I learned how to wax the thread, how to stitch correctly, how to read the patterns and identify where to start, how to secure and change the thread and two ways to correct mistakes. It'll take approx 80 hours to complete beading... ! Today I managed a line and a half. Each tiny Czech bead is sewn on individually. I am happy with my start βΊοΈ
