* Get 15% off your first order at www.cottagecoppicing.co.uk * In the winter of 2011, I was recuperating from a dog bite I received while working in my then-dog-walking and pet-sitting business. With a shared interest

in the outdoors, my dad invited me to spend a couple of days with him in an NRW woodland that he was restoring into a working hazel coppice. I was hooked! What is coppicing? You can find out more here. https://www.cottagecoppicing.co.uk/what-is-coppicing

After the first winter, the idea of making products to sell bore out of hate of waste and ever-increasing piles of wood! Fast forward 14 years, and I now spend my winters restoring a local 9-acre ancient semi-natural woodland and the rest of the year in my industrial unit making the products you find in my shop. I make everything. Self-taught, or should I say ‘Dad-taught,’ I took to woodworking and wished I’d taken it up earlier. Sustainability is important to me. All the wood used in my work is from sustainable sources or FSC-certified businesses (Forest Stewardship Council). I coppice the round wood such as hazel, ash, and cherry myself in the woodland I manage. I occasionally buy in branch wood from local tree surgeons from small garden jobs. I use ash and oak timber from my local timber yard, Wentwood Timber Centre, and American white oak or beech from FSC-certified Mon Timber Supplies. For the most part, I can tell you exactly which woodland the item you purchased initially came from. If made from hazel, I can practically take you to the tree! While practical, my products are bought emotionally; customers love a piece that resonates with them. Knowing the history of the work is part of that love affair. Even the elements I make from bought-in timber have a history; the local timber yard will know the woodland it came from or the country of origin. Collaboration

I love working with other local businesses. All my personalised products are engraved by a beautiful local company, Bespoke Laser UK. View my work. Please take a look through my shop - new products get added regularly. https://www.cottagecoppicing.co.uk/

If you can’t find what you are looking for, message me , and I will try my best to help. If I can’t, I might be able to point you toward someone who can. Best wishes,
Lisa

I'm looking to make connections in the NEET / EOTAS space in South/Mid Wales or South West of England area.
I had such a positive experience working with Careers Wales providing work experience but unfortunately the project has come to an end.
I'm looking to understand the system, the provisions available and how I could fit into it.
I'm specifically interested in the 14+ age group.
I'd welcome hearing from anyone with experience in this area: service providers or service users.
Cheers, Lisa

Did you know?

Hazel trees are monoecious, meaning they have both female and male flowers. They are wind pollinated but can't pollinate themselves, you need at least 2 hazel tree's to make baby Hazels!

The catkin is the male flower and the female flower is a teeny tiny pretty red flower. And it's that flower, when pollinated that grows into hazelnuts.

There's lots of colour starting to appear in the woods. We've got a great show of the beautiful red scarlet elf cups. The yellow lesser celandine are starting to appear. Soon we'll have white wood anemone followed by blue/purple blue bells. All against a backdrop of beautiful green mosses. Oh and I saw a frog 🐸

3 large pallets taken apart with a chainsaw 🤣 ready to make bug houses next month.

One of the first things you learn in coppicing is 'bring the wood to you, don't go to the wood'. Coppicing is a physical job so the easier you make it the better. Work through the wood where you drop it and stack it behind you.

It's a great habit to learn. Pallets taken apart where they were stacked (with the owners permission). Timbers de-nailed by the side (with the help of a scrap set of drawers. Then the waste carried to my unit (much lighter than taking the whole pallets).
