PORTRAIT OF ELIZA IN RED
By R.O.Lenkiewicz
HISTORY:
This stunning portrait is available for view at the Reuben Lenkiewicz Gallery in Ashburton.
It was painted in the 80’s to early 1990s at the artists Barbican Studio in Plymouth and Eliza was painted in a variety of paintings by Lenkiewicz over the years.
DESIGN AND STYLE:
This painting has a beautiful warmth to it.
It is also a dynamic and vibrant work expressed through the ex*****on of the brushwork and the rich colours.
It is an attractive and engaging portrait.
This painting is also signed by Lenkiewicz. Possibly at a later date. It is possible the painting was sold by the artist much later than when it was painted and then it was signed.
FRAME AND CONDITION:
The painting is framed in a simply black frame which works well but a higher quality frame with a gold trim would also look good.
The general condition of the painting and paint is excellent maintaining its colours beautifully.
The painting is 1m by 1m approx.
Dated circa 1980-1990.
Price on application.

A BEAUTIFUL CONGREVE CLOCK
POA

A rare remarkable Congreve rolling ball clock has finally arrived in the gallery.

The Congreve clock is an unconventional mechanical timekeeper invented by Sir William Congreve and patented in 1808.

How It Works

• Rolling Ball Escapement: Instead of a traditional pendulum or balance wheel, the clock uses a small steel or ceramic ball that rolls back and forth along a zigzag track on an inclined, tilting platform.

• Reversing Tilt: It takes between 15 seconds and 1 minute for the ball to traverse the track. When it reaches the end, it trips a lever that unlocks the escapement, instantly tilting the platform in the opposite direction and advancing the clock hands.

• Separate Dials: Time is typically displayed across three separate silver-plated or porcelain dials showing hours, minutes, and seconds.

History & Design

• Invention: First presented to the Prince of Wales (later George IV) in 1808, early versions were built by clockmakers like Gravel and Tolkien or John Moxon. An example resides in the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace.

• Modern Reproductions: High-end makers like O. Comitti & Son Ltd still produce luxury mechanical editions (such as the Comitti The Congreve in rhodium or gold).

Accuracy & Maintenance

• Kinetic Sculpture: While visually hypnotic and ingenious, the Congreve clock is notoriously inaccurate as a practical timepiece.

• Vulnerability: Dust, debris on the open tray, and thermal expansion from temperature
changes easily alter the ball's rolling speed and disrupt accuracy.
