An architect is not the first person you should call...
Unless you are building a house from the ground up, going straight to an architect before anything else is one of the most common and costly mistakes I see people make.
I work with clients regularly who arrive with full architectural drawings already in hand, plans that have been paid for, revised, discussed at length and often the first thing I have to do (which is never an easy conversation) is tell them that what has been drawn up isn’t quite right.
That the extension they’ve been quoted fifty thousand pounds for might not be necessary
That the plans don’t actually solve the problems the family is living with every day
That the builders haven’t looked at the drawings properly because the drawings don’t yet reflect how the space will actually be used
And the mental load of that moment is enormous...
You’ve already been through the whole process once, the conversations, the decisions, the emotional investment of imagining your home differently and then you have to go back to the beginning.
An architect is brilliant at what they do, but they are not paid to ask you the questions that matter most before a single line is drawn...
How do you actually live in this space?
What isn’t working and why?
What do you need this home to do for you that it isn’t doing right now?
Those questions come first, because the answer to them determines whether you need an architect at all, how much of the building work is actually necessary and what the brief should be before anyone starts drawing.
Get that clarity first and you will save time, money and an enormous amount of unnecessary stress.
That is exactly what my Your Home Understood service is for.
