Well, here’s what became of it! 🦋

What started as a collection of copper wire, gemstones and beads has blossomed into something rather lovely.

Introducing my handmade Tree of Peace & Harmony. 💕

A little creation that’s taken quite a bit of patience, a lot of twisting and perhaps a few conversations with myself along the way! 😂

Here’s the finished piece. What do you think?

🦋 WHAT’S ON THE TABLE? … IT’S BACK! 🎉

Some of you might remember my old What’s on the Table? posts from the original Mariposa Creations.

Well, I’ve decided it’s time to bring them back!

For those who don’t remember, or are new to Mariposa, it’s a little peek behind the scenes at whatever I’m creating, experimenting with or generally making a mess of at the workbench! 😂

And today’s table is certainly living up to that description!

There’s a plan behind all this, I promise… but I’m keeping the finished creation a secret for now. 🤫

Any guesses what this little lot might become?

Watch this space! 🦋❤️

🍂 A little shop full of lovely things… 🦋

There’s something rather special about wandering into a little independent shop and discovering something you weren’t even looking for!

At Mariposa Creations, our shelves are filled with beautiful handmade creations, thoughtful gifts, jewellery, home accessories and plenty of little surprises.

Every piece has its own story, and so many have been lovingly created by talented independent makers.

Whether you’re starting your Christmas shopping, looking for a birthday present, or simply fancy a browse, we’d love to see you.

And remember, you don’t need a reason to pop in — sometimes a little look around is just what you need! 💕

🦋 Something for the blokes today!

It’s a bracelet-making kind of day at Mariposa! 🔨

Leather, braided cord, some rather lovely metal clasps and a bit of experimenting at the workbench.

Mariposa is full of beautiful gifts, but we’re certainly not forgetting the men! ❤️

A few new bracelets will hopefully be finding their way onto those empty display hooks very soon.

And they’ll be available made to order, so you can choose the size for that perfect fit!

Because the blokes deserve something a little different too!

🦋 Another week at Mariposa Creations!

There’s been plenty happening behind the scenes at Mariposa this week, with new creations, new arrivals and even a little something to look forward to in the New Year!

We’ve been welcoming people popping in with their Christmas shopping lists, having a browse, gathering ideas and looking for those slightly different gifts that you don’t find everywhere.

We’ve also welcomed Rosalie Sampson to our growing collection of talented makers, and her wonderful wire dragonfly has already found a place in our window. Isn’t she fabulous? ❤️

And speaking of lovely creations finding new homes, the hare has left the building! 🐇 One of Jill Holmes final commissioned pieces was collected and is now off to be enjoyed in its new home.

I’ve been busy at the workbench too, with a new hard drive clock and a penny-farthing clock joining the collection. I do love experimenting with different materials and seeing what I can create!

And, of course, the windows have had their weekly makeover. Now, anyone who knows me knows I’m usually a blue person, but this week I’ve gone a little bit RED! ❤️

From the beautiful poppy pieces and red resin artwork to the resin bowl, there’s definitely a splash of something different in the window this week!

It’s still that slightly eclectic mixture of art, glass, jewellery, gifts and curios. Things made here, things made by other talented people, and quite a few things you probably didn’t know you needed until you saw them! 😂

🎨 And a little bit of news for January…

You’ve been asking and the answer is yes!

I’m planning to bring back my Fluid Art Workshops!

These were something I used to run at the original Mariposa, and I’m rather looking forward to introducing them again.

This time, they’ll be lovely small workshops, with a maximum of three people, so everyone gets plenty of individual attention.

Two and 1/2 hours of colour, creativity, experimenting and probably getting a little messy! 😂

You’ll create two canvases, with all materials and tuition included, for £45 per person.

I’m hoping to start in January, and with Christmas approaching, they could make a rather lovely gift experience too. 🎁

More details and booking information will follow soon!

As always, it’s been lovely seeing our regular faces, and thank you to everyone who pops in for a chat, a browse or a little inspiration.

If you’re passing through Okehampton Arcade, do come in and have a wander. There’s always something different to discover. 🦋

This week at Mariposa… a little later than usual! 🦋

I normally do my weekly catch-up on a Saturday. Somehow it’s Monday at 5pm, so that clearly went well. 😂

There’s been quite a bit of change at Mariposa over the last week or so, and the shop is looking rather different again.

One of the things I always wanted Mariposa to be was a place that keeps evolving. Our maker spaces change, new work arrives, displays get moved around (usually because I decide something would look better somewhere else!) and there should always be something different to discover when you come back.

And October has brought some lovely new additions.

Julie Carter has joined us with her beautiful silk artwork. Her landscapes have so much texture and movement in them, and they’ve created a gorgeous new gallery area in the shop.

We’ve also welcomed Angela Watson Art whose striking blue artwork uses the cyanotype process, with her own photography and embellishment creating some wonderfully atmospheric pieces.

And Lily, from Somerset, has joined us with a new collection of jewellery — so the jewellery area has had a bit of a shake-up too.

Meanwhile, Amelia Glass has brought in more work, including some fabulous new vases and lamps, and there’s been the usual rearranging, shuffling and curating to find homes for everything.

And of course, the window has changed again! I change it every week, and I think this one sums up Mariposa rather nicely — a slightly eclectic mixture of art, glass, jewellery, gifts and curios. Things made here, things made by other talented people, and quite a few things you probably didn’t know you needed until you saw them. 😂

I’m also adding another string to my own creative bow and learning to work with copper jewellery. I’ve already got lots of ideas, so all being well there should be some new Mariposa pieces appearing in time for Christmas.

And amongst all the moving, making and changing, my lovely regulars have continued to pop in for a browse and a chat. I genuinely never take that for granted. ❤️

That’s really what Mariposa is — not a shop that stays exactly the same from one visit to the next, but a collection of art, gifts, curiosities and creations that keeps changing as the people behind them create something new.

So if you haven’t been in for a little while, come and have another nose. There’s quite a lot you won’t have seen before. 🦋

So… I painted. 🦋

Two little hexagonal canvases, now sitting in this week’s window. Nothing enormous — although there is a rather massive canvas at the back of the shop that I’ve started repainting, so perhaps watch this space. 😂

But those two little canvases mean rather more to me than their size would suggest.

After losing Ken, I stopped creating. Completely. I didn’t “keep my hand in”. I didn’t quietly carry on painting behind the scenes. I just stopped and changed my direction to supporting other creative and small businesses as a consultant.

It wasn’t until June, when Kev encouraged me to bring Mariposa back to life, that I started creating again.

Since opening the shop in July, something rather lovely has happened. Almost every day somebody tells me what a lovely shop it is. They comment on the things I’ve made, the beautiful work from our makers, pieces of my older artwork, the displays, the way everything has been put together and even the way I curate the shop.

And I don’t think people necessarily realise quite what those comments have done.

Little by little, they’ve helped me find my confidence in my creative world again. They’ve made me want to make things. They’ve made me experiment again. And now, finally, they’ve helped me pick up my paints and return to my contemporary work.

So this week, I painted.

And yes, I’m rather pleased about that. ❤️

Meanwhile, Mariposa itself has had a major rejig. And by “rejig”, I mean virtually everything has moved from where it was before. 😂 If you’re a regular who knew exactly where to find something, I’m afraid all bets are off.

The beautiful wave piece by Cornish Maid Jewellery went to a new owner this week, and we’ve taken several new commissions — including another resin penny-farthing!

Christmas has well and truly entered the conversation too. Bespoke Christmas gifts are being discussed, designed and made, which I absolutely love because sometimes the best gifts start with somebody walking in and saying, “I’ve got an idea…or “I’ve got no idea!”😂

We also recently donated a picture to Kent House for their raffle, which raised a a total of a fantastic £490, and that’s led to a commission for another picture for one of their members of staff. ❤️

Monday was absolutely bonkers — unbelievably busy — and somewhere amongst everything else, Mariposa even made an appearance in the promotional video for Devon & Cornwall’s Great Scenic Railways! 🚂

So that’s been our week.

Things have moved. Things have sold. New things are being commissioned and Christmas presents are already being created.

But perhaps the loveliest thing Mariposa has created so far isn’t actually something sitting on a shelf.

It’s given me somewhere to begin creating again. 🦋❤️
